Very much one of the best RPGs ever made. However, for modern audiences, it's best to play the game with the Moguri Mod. Trust me.

User Reviews
I'm gonna be real, I got brought here from FFXIV Dawntrail and ProJared's FF review series. I was promised that this game was gonna be the best from the series, so here I am, finished with the game(storywise at least). Dawntrail's littered IX references didn't really betray much about the game, so I knew next to nothing apart from the kingdom of Alexandria. Let's start with the story. IX has an extremely solid early to mid-late game story, rooting the journey of Zidane's party through the continents of Gaia, moving from town to town, continent to continent, slowly unravelling the truth of the world. I'd say IX's weakness in the story was in the final 15% of the game where major story questions are answered without any sort of proper payoff. None of the characters in the game are prodding around for answers beyond what they have already discovered at that point and the expansion of the story to cosmic level threats had no purpose. This feeds into the final boss of the game who doesn'...
Regularly crashes. No matter how much you love the original, don't pay money for a game that can't even reliably run, that square enix are too lazy to fix. It's a shameless cash grab.
My childhood, riding the chocobos, searching for vivi, wondering wtf Quina actually is and fighting houses.. FF9 is special for me and I hope anyone wanting to play it enjoys it as much as I have.
I played Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 as a kid, and despite probably playing it the least I've always said 9 is my favorite. Felt good to play it again to remember why. A lot of it has to do with Zidane being fun, energetic, and largely care free. I have never really liked the gloomy, moody characters in Final Fantasy games like Cloud and Squall, they're just no fun. Zidane is just way more likable than those dorks. The rest of the cast is no slouch either, but a lot of that is stuff I definitely forgot about in the intervening 20 years since I last played FF9. I really, really like the amount of comic relief in the game. It's not always timed well, but I like the gags nonetheless. The combat system is from 1999, nothing really special, but I do like how almost every boss has weaknesses and status effects. I do like how spells like Protect and Shell expire, as well as healing items being kind of bad to make healers more important. Auto-Regen feels kinda busted by the end of ...
A great game and the remaster is nice. My complaints are more related to the game itself. There are a lot of missables, and that can be really frustrating for people that like to do everything. On the other hand though, I don't think I will have a lot of difficulty getting myself to replay it. I had played it back when it was originally released on the Playstation 1, and it's nice to revisit again after about 25 years. If the game wasn't so good at its core, I would take much more issue with the number of missables (Stiltzkin-related, Mognet, etc.).
This + Moguri Mod is the absolute, undisputed, definitive way to play one of the greatest JRPGs of all time. Huge thanks to the modding team that put Moguri Mod together. If we never get a remake, at least we have this. As for the game itself, its FFIX. An easy shoo-in for the Top 3 of the franchise. And most probably in the Top 10 of all video games.
Great game. If you're a fan of Final Fantasy games, you already know. If you're new, this is another greatest hit from Square.
This was the first Final Fantasy game I owned. Can't begin to describe the nostalgia and feelings.
