About This Game

A Solitaire Mystery is a collection of over 20 unusual solitaire cardgames, ranging from somewhat standard rulesets playable with a traditional deck of cards to mysterious experimental takes on the genre and funky reimplementations of other games in solitaire form. Among other things, ASM makes you grow and harvest plants, defeat eldritch monsters, perform alchemy and play poker over the course of its solitaires.

Each solitaire included has a difficulty rating, and each solitaire tracks your victory streak so that if you enjoy a particular entry a lot, you can try to go for multiple victories in a row! The game is fully mouse-driven, and includes settings to e.g. enable more lenient undoing and utilize a specified random seed to allow trying the same deal multiple times, or even share it with your friends.

A Solitaire Mystery was included in the 2025 Experimental Games Workshop at the Game Developers' Conference.

As a long time variant solitaire fan I was really excited for this game when I originally got it a year ago, and was excited to get it on Steam. I've now 100% the achievements after about 36 hours. At the very least, my time was not wasted. There are a lot of unique ideas and spins I've never seen in variant solitaire that I'd love to see iterated on. Several solitaires have become mainstays for me (garden solitaire, tear solitaire, solartair, 52 pickup), and I'd consider some of what this game does the best in the genre. However, there is a lot of mediocre in the collection. A majority of the solitaires are only enjoyable on the first playthrough and don't stand up to replay. A good few are just ridiculously simple, single stack solitaire in particular has a very simple and boring algorithm you can execute to always win. Some aren't very fun even on the first play. Overall the difficulty level isn't that high either, but that's not necessarily a problem. Regardless, I'm glad I play...

Recommended. Inventive solitaire-puzzle with clever twists that make it feel fresh again. My only open question: are the levels always solvable, or do some seeds force a restart? Either way, the idea is strong and I want to see it through—kudos to the devs.

My main takeaway from A Solitaire Mystery is that 30 solitaires is a lot of solitaire :P. I'm finished with the game now having won each variant at least twice, but I could see myself booting it back up occasionally to replay some of my favourites such as Garden Solitaire (or Fork Solitaire??). There's lots of cool ideas on display here. Around half the collection is "Solitaire but here's the twist" while the other half is "Solitaire controls but wacky core idea". I really liked seeing all of the wacky twists on Solitaire and some of those ended up being my favourites, but generally I preferred the gameplay of the more standard, toned down solitaires. Which I guess is to say that I enjoyed the collection! I'd say the game succeeds in having 30 interesting solitaire mockups, but around 25% of them were only engaging to me on a first clear. Once you figure out a strategy for those ones every proceeding game plays similarly if not the exact same, which is kinda the antithesis to Solitai...
