I've heard so many times, "Tales of Symphonia is such a great game!" etc etc. So I finally got around to playing it. Going into this game without looking at guides and trying to wander the overworld blind is such a slog. So much so that... -I dropped Symphonia like 15% in -played and finished Zesteria and Berseria -came back to Sypmhonia after 7 years -game still felt like a slog -decided to follow a walkthrough guide step by step for the first time in my life -realized just how deep in shit I would have been going into this game blind -slowly and agonizingly beat the game I absolutely loathe the overworld, its controls and its camera. Enemies will spawn and move randomly, if you run into one you start a fight. Sure just avoid them, but the thing is after about 10 seconds the game forces an encounter. The overworld is pretty huge and there are things hidden around for you to explore and find. But this forced encounter is the main reason I don't want to explore in an explor...

World map is terrible and your objectives are confusing. I played the mod version with better graphics but it isn't enough to compensate how long and tedious the world areas can get. Didn't like the combat, too, a lot of mechanics that were difficult to get. If this game is as long as they say better run away. Had a better time with Vesperia.

I'm biased as this is a nostalgic favourite from my elementary school days, but I fell in love with this game the moment I played it and have sought out every way to play it since then, with this being my latest. It's imperfect in a lot of ways, granted, and the PC port is dodgy, but it's a story that remains rather underrated and the combat still feels good, although other contemporary action-RPGs like Star Ocean from the era had arguably far better depth to its actual roleplaying elements. The characters are lovable and memorable, Scott Menville's voice alone makes the English dub worth it, and the Japanese dub is nothing to scoff at either, although I am bummed there's no English dub for the skits. Even with Tales of Arise's more modern, quasi-Genshin appeal, Symphonia had the first fully 3D battle system and laid the blueprint for many successful entries in the franchise to follow it (and Dawn of the New World, which I am told exists).

Tales of Symphonia is a landmark title in the JRPG genre, originally debuting on the Nintendo GameCube in 2003 and later making its way to other platforms, including a somewhat controversial port to Steam. At its heart, it represents a high point in the long-running “Tales of” series, combining traditional RPG storytelling with real-time action combat, richly developed characters, and an expansive fantasy world. Its narrative is ambitious and layered, presenting what at first appears to be a classic “chosen one saves the world” trope before gradually peeling back the layers to reveal a darker, more complex tale about prejudice, power, sacrifice, and redemption. The story follows Lloyd Irving, a headstrong and well-meaning young man who becomes entangled in a journey far bigger than himself after his childhood friend Colette is chosen to undergo a world-regeneration pilgrimage. What begins as a seemingly noble quest quickly takes on heavier philosophical weight as the party unc...

Tales of Symphonia's story revolves about a boy named Lloyd, who is best friends with the Chosen One, Colette. Symphonia's premise has been done before (Final Fantasy X, Grandia II) but ToS manages to put its own spin on this overly done concept by focusing on the kind of pressure and hardships someone forced into that position would face. ToS's story manages to be an epic tale full of twist and turns without sacrificing the internal coherence of the work. While there are some small plotholes, none are so big as to ruin the entire narrative. The average player (that being people that will only play the game once) will not even notice. The characters are likeable and all of them have organic, well thought out developments. This evolutions are not a 180 degree change, were the characters become someone else entirely, but an extension and more mature version of the people they were when they began their journey. It's pretty impressive that none of them falls flat, considering there's ni...
