I skipped this game for a long time because I used to think Sniper Elite V2 made its predecessor obsolete. I was wrong. Sniper Elite V2 and the other sequels do not replace Sniper Elite 1. If you are curious about where the franchise started, this is a worthy experience—as long as you can tolerate some old-game jank and goofy voice acting.

Personally, I was not a big fan of the movement and controls as it was a bit awkward for me. This is the only sniper elite game in the series that I got annoyed at playing though.
It's ugly, the controls are clumsy, it didn't age well at all but it sure as hell has the atmosphere. Great soundtrack, bad AI which actually makes it really challenging (that's a good thing apparently), fantastic environment and the nostalgia... oh boy. Don't forget the fact that it's where the great series started. Don't skip it, it's a must, just have a look at it keeping in mind it's an old game.
The game shows its age, but if you enjoy the feeling of early 2000's video games, you will get all the jank, strange controls and silly voice acting here. Besides those things though, this game is a great, more tactical alternative to, let's say, PS2-era Medal of Honor games. You get the same vibes but with more ways to complete your objectives. As with many games this old, however, you may want to look through the Guides section to find a couple of essential mods to make the game work better on modern computers. For those entering the Sniper Elite franchise and wondering if they should play this for the story, Sniper Elite V2 serves as a total reboot, making the first game totally separate from the other games in the series story-wise, so you're not missing any relevant lore by skipping this one! If you really enjoy sniping and sneaking, do consider playing this one too though, to see where the series started!
For a twenty year old game its mechanics are still pretty good and I find the gameplay very engaging
I like the rest of the series, but the original is a little too clunky for anyone that was introduced to the series at 2 or beyond. It doesn't help that an invisible wall triggered meaning I couldn't even progress past the first objective of the first level.
Sniper Elite is an "old game" with a LOT of flaws, and it's extremely frustrating to play it nowadays. The controls and character maneuverability are absolutely awful, and will give you a terrible time on their own. It's a shame, because the game offered interesting things: playing as a German soldier (rare in this kind of game), missions with varied environments, good dubbing in different languages (including French)...etc. If you want to start the series, do it with Sniper Elite V2 Remastered which is an excellent entry, where Rebellion had finally found a vision and gameplay that honored the WWII sniper fantasy.
Best sniper elite game. Hate me if you want.
Played it extensively outside of STEAM almost two decades ago. My first multiplayer shooter experience. It hooked me and shaped my interests. Game partially responsible for what I like and who I am now.
