Golden Tee Arcade Classics

While us fans wait in anticipation for Digital Eclipse's anthology release in the Mortal Kombat series, they have decided to tide us over by aiming for a broad, albeit underserved consumer demographic: fiftysomething year-old Americans who have fond memories of sports bars and the arcade golf games played therein. This is truly one of the games of all time.

It's literally your favorite barcade game on Steam. It feels great to play. Hate to admit I don't have a trackball (yet), but plays fine with mouse, maybe just not as easy. Absolutely one of my favorite arcade cabinet games out there, so this is an absolute treat. Yes, I would pay $30 again for this. Online play would be amazing. Just saying.

This game is hard. Not bad hard, just hard. It's old school hard. It's arcade game hard. You have to pay attention to every single thing you do and play very carefully. That said, it's great fun. You'll gnash your teeth, you'll occasionally swear, but you'll feel you've earned everything you've achieved. Sure you'll feel occasionally you've been robbed by RNGsus, but you need to keep at it. In most cases you'll know exactly what you did wrong. I played this with a mouse rather than a trackball which is not ideal. It's not perfect, but it's adequate enough. Oh, and the interface is garbage until you've got a handle on it. The price is a bit high, get it on sale, grit your teeth and prepare for being occasionally royally shafted. I still think it's good. It's a good example of the old adage, winning is fun but losing is also fun (especially when you don't have to keep slamming money into it).

I am writing this review as a Steam Deck user and a long-time fan of Golden Tee Golf series in the 90's and early 2000's. I am not reviewing the Golden Tee games themselves, but rather this emulated recreation of those games by Atari. First, I am very happy to see that somebody finally decided to re-release these barcade gems in modern times. They age well in terms of playability despite the 90's graphics. Moreover, I am very pleased with Atari's implementation using the overlays with the controls and the virtual trackball. I have played all of the early Golden Tee games via MAME (including MAME on Steam Deck). To be able to bring them together in one offering is very nice indeed. The ability to practice shot types is a welcome feature (I wish I had that during the barcade days!!). I do have an XARCADE tankstick, but have yet to try it with this recreation. This game is awesome just like I remembered it in the bars, except I wish it would have better graphics for being on the PC.

Classic!!!!!!

If you use to play the Golden Tee arcade games then I see this as a deal, considering I play hundreds of dollars in those arcade games. Yes, there might be better golf games out there but the great retro fun of there games are not to be underestimated if you use to play them at an arcade, bar, pub, saloon, tavern, and/or icehouse like I did. It works fine with a mouse, but I might buy a tracball just for the fun of it. If you have problems in the begining don't forget to adjust your preferences to mouse, tracball, etc. The bowling and shuffleboard games are a nice bonus, especially when you only have time for a short game.
