About the Game

A Video Game About a Woman Talking to the Police

Her Story is the award winning video game from Sam Barlow, creator of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and Aisle. A crime fiction game with non-linear storytelling, Her Story revolves around a police database full of live action video footage. It stars Viva Seifert, actress and one half of the band Joe Gideon and the Shark.

How does it work?

Her Story sits you in front of a mothballed desktop computer that’s logged into a police database of video footage. The footage covers seven interviews from 1994 in which a British woman is interviewed about her missing husband. Explore the database by typing search terms, watch the clips where she speaks those words and piece together her story.

Unlike anything you've played before, Her Story is an involving and moving experience. A game that asks you to listen.

Having a button that says "delete session data" when there's an area to store clips called "user session" that instead of clearing that area RESETS THE ENTIRE GAME is the single dumbest oversight I've ever seen in a game and utterly and completely ruined the experience. Was really enjoying the gameplay loop and the content and the acting and then bam- I'll never open it again and am just watching the videos online. Just incredibly disappointing.

Though it was a short game, I really think the devs deserve this. I have fun playing the game, trying to find "her stories", the plots, the dramas,... It feels real and a bit scary. But I enjoyed it! Not a replayable game though.

A unique detective game. You watch clips of interviews of a woman, and figure out everything by yourself. You have to think of words to search for relevant entries. The game doesn't have an "ending" that you can mark as complete. You have to find your own ending, and that's when your are satisfied enough with what you've discovered. It's not a game of "complete this" or "figure that out". It's about satisfying our curiosity of how much you want to know about this case. I spent over 8 hours just looking for everything to connect the dots and figure out everything about the story. And then I reached a point where I think, I learned enough and have a solid evidences and proof about what really happened and who did what. That's where it ended and I think I'm happy enough with the game.

This is an interesting game built around a unique storytelling device that allows information to trickle out gradually and entirely user-guided. When I first understood the basic mechanic I was worried about "accidentally" finding out information too soon or in a dissatisfying way, but this didn't happen. It is very well designed in how it paces the juiciest reveals and inspires new keyword searches, and how new information re-contextualizes things you likely found out early on. Or maybe I just got lucky with my searches. Even though it contains a story element/twist that I typically don't care for in other mystery fiction, the format is so engaging that it works. Highly recommend for mystery enjoyers.

i really wanted to like this game - i gave it a lot of time - but it is just really hard to know what the hell i am meant to be doing here. i feel like the result is a bit obvious , but i am just too bored by he gameplay to keep going.

Pretty fantastic game The fact that people still talk about it (
with both theories being satisfying and also seemingly plausible
) is pretty awesome. I highly recommend looking up story discussions once it's over. The only thing I wish the game had is a way to watch all of the videos in order or pick a specific video out without needing a keyword once you're done. You can obviously look it up later on YouTube or something, but having it in-game would be nice.

the game had me on edge throughout the playthrough, it's an overall short game but it twists your brain in every direction, it starts with questions and as you progress you only get more mysteries, even after you complete the initial narrative it will leave you with questions and a sense to go back and try to look at every single video in the database, it's a great game to play alone or with a bunch of friends. recommended for anybody who likes puzzles
