Came in with no expectations, but got totally blown away! What a great modernization of retro RPGs. Plenty of good things to say about the fantastic story, the characters, and the world design, but the standout feature is definitely the combat. Check it out if you like: - Story-driven RPG with lovable cast - Fast-paced combat system (you switch between 5 different elemental modes with no cooldowns for spellcasting!) - Intricate puzzles and dungeons

I know you guys wanted to make the world feel like an MMO but making the grind so tedious was a bit much. Every new region, enemies are so much stronger than the last that you need to upgrade to new gear, unless you like dealing scratch damage, but the gear that just costs money is mediocre at best. So you need to go collect crafting materials to get the good stuff. You need a lot of every new material in the area both from ores/bushes to enemy drops. Every new region is bigger and more winding, making just traversing it take longer, and you have to run circles around the region because the crafting materials are both spread out and slow to regenerate. Many enemies will be resistant to whatever elemental attacks you have unlocked when you first meet them(you might not even get the element they're weak to until after you've completed the main story in that region) making them take twice as long to kill. Once you've managed to gather enough materials after hours(or days, if you have a ...

This is one of those games where I wish steam didn't have a binary review system. I don't think this is a terrible game just a mediocre one. It tries to be too many things at once. An action game, a puzzle game, a faux mmo, a story driven experience; I don't think it does any of these things particularly well. The action is probably the most competent part, it's not especially interesting but it is serviceable. The puzzles range from very easy to tedious. The mmo aspect, well there's quests to take, a lot of them. The thing about mmos is that they usually are only fun because you're interacting with other people. Everything else is along the lines of busy work. The level up system also a hold over from being a faux mmo is not interesting. I was never excited to gain a level, it felt like it barely meant anything. The story, I can't say much I didn't play a ton, but I think 5 hours is a reasonable enough time to decide if you like something or not. The characters are, for the most par...

CrossCode is an an outstanding RPG and one of the best experiences I've ever had from a game. Perfect for any person who'd want to explore a cool virtual sci-fi MMO, or murder the local wildlife by throwing balls at them with violent rage as those around you grow increasingly concerned, or meet interesting characters. The combat system in CrossCode feels AMAZING. It is super simple, only including melee and ranged attacks, a dash, and a guard with special attacks of each type that you can unlock. It is very fast-paced - little end lag, no animations to get stuck in - essentially, you spend the whole time DOING in crosscode, attacking, dodging, reacting. There is also an element system that lets you change your attack type and gain access to new special attacks, which adds a ton of variety to combat since by the end you'll have access to four elements with their own strengths and 20+ special attacks to use at will, which are all actually useful enough that I used most of them into the ...

TL;DR ver: CrossCode is truly amazing game, full of soul, heart and with captivating story. It's cute, quirky, funny, cozy and quite challenging (but fair). Only issues are: somewhat clunky control scheme (dash/block on same button being biggest offender for me) and difficulty that can feel frustrating even if it's technically fair. Absolutely worth a play

What makes CrossCode standout for me is narrative, and gameplay. Whole game takes place in a MMO world, and it really felt nostalgic and familiar in funny ways in that regard. There is some interesting overarching narrative related to it being MMO, but where story really shines is Lea's arc. It's personal heartfelt narrative that got me tear-eyed on occasions (ok, I was bawling once). It also made her one of my favorite characters. It's amazing that Lea even limited to few words (and faces) shows more personality and emotion, than many fully voiced protagonists. Other supporting characters are also quite fun but not rea...

Good job emulating the feel of an MMO into a single player RPG experience. At first, the gear grind seemed tedious and overwhelming. But then, after spending some time learning the gameplay loop, I started treating the game like Monster Hunter, which you essentially gather materials to min-max your build and stats through "crafting" gear (or "trading" gear, in this game). The first few hours felt like a slog to get through, especially before I realized gear progression was crucial. But after that, most of the content was manageable, albeit still very challenging. Had been putting this game off for years, leaving to sit on my backlogs of Steam games. But I finally decided to revisit some of my older games and now regret not buying into the hype sooner.
