I bought this game about 8 years ago, played it awhile, and felt it a poor seguel to Mafia II, which I really liked. So I moved on. Just started it again to perhaps get ready for the new Mafia game and was pretty surprised. The game is good. Great stories, voice acting, and historic placement. Mechanics, movement, and combat are pedestrian, at best. It isn't Doom. But the story is great. I grew up in the South in the 1960s, (yes I am old and also like computer games), but the game nicely delves into the issues of the time using radio news, rock music, Vietnam, and overt racism. It is a history lesson, as well as a fun organized crime game. That being said, the game (2016) still has bugs (which is pretty lame re the developer), but not as many as I first thought. If you can get Mafia III cheap or on sale, and if you like action games that are thoughtful, give it a whirl. I will wait for reviews of Mafia: Old Country, but would wait for quite a bit before purchasing it give...

User Reviews
Wow, how did this game get published on Steam? It is nearly impossible to get it started with key/joystick input, and when it does, even on a modern system with a Ryzen 7600 and an rtx 4080 it runs like dog crap - slow, skipping frames and buggy as heck. What a black mark on 2K's reputation. In short: DO NOT BUY
Great story, great main character, and a fantastic time period — every core idea has so much potential. Unfortunately, most of it is executed poorly. Gameplay repetitive and boring, sidequests are just - go steal 3 cars, go kill somebody and go steal some weapons. And achivements are poor. Kill 10 enemies with mines, collect all journals, collect posters, collect collect collect. Advice: skip all the extra content. Just focus on the main story — the experience is far better that way. And buy it on sale
Played Mafia III to 100% and got all the achievements, but honestly it never really clicked with me. The story and atmosphere are strong — Lincoln Clay’s revenge arc, the soul/blues soundtrack, the 1968 New Bordeaux setting — those moments were great. But the game turns into repetitive open‑world grind way too quickly. The whole control zones and rackets thing? First playthrough, I gave Vito too many territories early on, Cassandra spat the dummy and left for good. Felt like the game punished me for trying to roleplay my choices. On my replay I spread the districts evenly to keep everyone’s perks, but it was still the same missions over and over: hit a racket, collect intel, trash some stuff, repeat. Driving around in Lincoln’s car — which is basically a custom hybrid muscle car (think GTO body with a Challenger-ish front) — was cool. Cruising through the bayou, the French Quarter, past the riverfront… nailed the vibe. But there’s no fast travel, so those l...
This game is like if you took the Mafia series and gave it to Ubisoft. Tedious repetitive open world doing the same thing over and over instead of a linear story driven game like the first 2 that I loved. I heard the new game Mafia: The Old Country went back to the linear non open world route so I hope that ones good.
Overly hated. It's a fun game, yes there's repetition in gameplay, but the story and ending(s) make it worth it and taking over the city is fun. It's not a bad game.
Despite that fact that community didn't like the game I can say that this part of Mafia left really good impression. Pros: - good story(fully fit Mafia concept) - remembering charachters - good shooting - good driving - good mechanichs for melee attacks - fantastic atmospheric city(a bit empty but nevertheless) Cons: - some bugs, not critical - a bit blurred graphics, however it is fully fit the timeline(may be switched off) - not very informative map(some missions did not disappear after completing) I liked this game.
That’s really great. Yeah, as everyone says, the mission structure is super repetitive — you need to kill some guy, and before that, you have to blow up a few spots or take out other guys to get info, repeat many, many times. But I’m kinda lucky though, because I enjoy clearing outposts by stealth. So honestly, none of that really matters — the story and characters are amazing, probably best in the trilogy. And the late-60s atmosphere is just… something else. Jimi Hendrix, Steppenwolf, Creedence, muscle cars and their sound design (very pleasant to drive), dawn of the CIA, communism posters — love it all. Highly recommend if you’re into that vibe, especially on sale.
Game crashes when trying to use full screen or launch in full screen.
This is a really bad game which I only recommend in case you want some game ownership bonuses for other games in the series - namely Mafia TOC and Lincoln's charm (a pretty useful one). The game itself is a buggy mess with broken achievements, tons of glitches (game crashes, cutscene freezes, game getting stuck in certain conditions...) and bad gameplay - sorry, hitscan guns suck and the combat is bad. The story is absolute nonsense as well and the main protagonist is a total degenerate (goes off to war in Vietnam to kill some folk and "find himself", comes back, the first thing he does is throw a glass bottle into the street, and then goes off to rob a bank and murder dozens of cops in the process, laughing about it). The R card is nonsensically displayed throughout the game and everyone you fight is a white guy, mostly supremacists. No Chinese Mafia, no Hispanic cartels, no black gangs except for the Haitians, who are your allies (except for a single mission) - but we get a KKK li...
