About This Game

Veteran Combat is a fun & retro 2D side-scrolling (arcade) fighting game for PC. Don't take it too seriously! ;)

Please read the manual for the extra movement key combinations:

Classification
Veteran Combat is a 2D side-scrolling (arcade) fighting game for PC.

Background
Be the leader of a small military unit from the 1940s. By defeating fifteen opponents, your goal is to convince the other members of the team that you are the one in charge. The fighting takes place in a tournament consisting of twelve scenes.

Characters
Twelve selectable characters and three hidden main opponents await the player. Playable characters include Igor the grenadier, Julia the nurse, Captain Ballast the sailorman, Dr. Bloodpressure the field surgeon, Natasha the spy, as well as several others emerging from the milieu of the 1940s.

Control
As for control, Veteran Combat follows the usual and proven standards used in other games of the genre, thus the basics can easily be mastered. Practicing the use of combos and hidden key combinations allows more spectacular and effective charges on the opponents.
Please read the manual.

Fields of Battle
The fighting takes place on twelve exciting locations, such as the wings of a plane flight, the top of a traveling train, or even the dizzy heights of a viaduct.

Music
All the scenes of the game are filled with the musical ambience of the 1940s, be it in a smoky pub or the dubious and fishy piers.

The Fight
Apart from the regular punches and kicks, several combo movements can be called forth. Through hidden key combinations ten kinds of extra attacks and wizardry, peculiar to almost each character, can be involved.

Choose your skill
The three adjustable difficulty levels (from novice to professional) provide for three different levels of challenge in tournaments.

Replay – when you need evidence
The duels can be recorded and played back, so there is no need to assert that you have really defeated this or that hidden character.

Varied and eventful game play
Having launched the game, the player can choose from the following options on the mainscreen:

  • beginning a tournament and face all the opponents, one after the other, and, finally, celebrate the victory with all the fighters (tournament);
  • challenging a friend for a quick duel played on the same computer, matches can be played with two teams, each consisting of up to three players (face 2 face, teamfight);
  • instant action with an unlocked (that is, already defeated in tournament) opponent (instant fight);
  • entering a quick fight against a master, whose skill level can be freely set by the player (training mode);

Reasons why this game is different
  • visual appearance resembling old black-and-white films
  • digitalized characters
  • humor
  • eventful scenes
  • atmospheric music reminiscent of the 1940s

This is really....weird. And not in a good way. My brain actually hurt after trying to wrap it around this game. I'm all for stupid fighting games. I paid full price for Girl Fight on XBLA. But I feel like no one making this game actually touched a fighting game in their lives. There's Low/High Punch/Kick, then a Block button, then an Extra button. It's called the Extra button. The commands for special moves are mind-boggling. Block, Block, Extra, Low Punch for a normal special move? Did they just throw darts at a board to decide what commands are for things? It's just a bad game, period. There's no modes that aren't just reskinned arcade mode or quick fight. There's no controller support. The AI is terrible. There's basically nothing to salvage here. Don't buy it.

If you're looking for a technical combat masterpiece, this ain't it. If you're looking for silly, dumb fun that is more hilarious more then anything else, then you've come to the right place. Veteran Combat seems like a successor to the original Mortal Kombat aesthic in terms of motion, but it's quirky nature and real-time character animations really make it just fun to laugh at. It's a game that had me smiling, even when basic features like having the combo list IN game, or controller support weren't there. It's not hard, It's got an interesting mechanic regarding a god mode after doing a 6 hit combo, but all in all, it's just pure dumb fun. Wish it had a color option, wish it wasn't as floaty as Way of The Warrior, wish the announcer had more enthusiasm and spoke a lot louder, WISH IT HAD FULLSCREEN, WISH I DIDN'T HAVE TO USE XPADDER TO ENABLE JOYSTICK...WISH THAT THE ONE NEW DIGITIZED FIGHTER WE'VE HAD IN YEARS COULD BE GOOD!!!!!!!!!!! Oh hey cool gasmask guy. Kewl.

great work of art. The live action style aesthetics of the game brought me to my childhood. Though the game has flaws. It is a very fun experience for some and has some comedic elements. At parts it feels like a satire and sometimes it is a homage to the fictional war stories of old. The expressions are over the top and that elevates the game. Dont expect a AAA fighting game but it s a work of love. there is a two player system with keyboard so thats a plus point.

Great arcade fun! Classic style fighter game in a retro look but with some live action characters. I love the funny remarks and gestures; the game's simplicity and silliness. Really fun! One of my top five games this year! No honestly!
