Actual blast from the past. Don't expect this game to look prettied up for the modern age. The video segments are grainy and the crt filter probably does some heavy lifting for wide screens. Two super appreciated quality of life improvements were added to this game: - Enhanced movement via analog stick. Don't gotta rely on tank controls and man does that feel nice. - Quicksave/load is available via select, as is rewind. Fear Effect goes from 0 to 100 easily and it's a plus for people new to it. The controls can be a bit frustrating but I do believe that's also a thing of its time. I used to play Fear Effect a lot on the ps1 and I definitely do not have a handle on this game as I did when I was younger. Fortunately you can change the controls via steam instead of using the defaults. If you're into that oldschool ps1 aesthetic this is THE game. One thing I would recommend is not being discouraged if things do get difficult because I think this is absolutely worth sticking with...

Fun game. Don't expect anything fancy. It's just a straight PC port from Playstation 1. But small enhancements like better controls and custom save games are well implemented. Runs perfectly fine on SteamDeck.
Excellent remaster of a PS1 classic. Holds surprisingly well after all these years. The story, art direction, puzzles and combat are still great; and they nailed the Cyberpunk, Neo Noir ambiance. I wish all the early PS1 greats (Dino Crisis, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve etc.) would get a similar coat of paint.
A PS1 Classic. Has all the jank just like I remember and works great on Steam Deck!
One of the best classics of all time. It has action, mystery, horror, futuristic visuals and chinese mythology all mixed up. Adventure, combat, exploration and puzzle solving, so if you enjoy games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill you will likely enjoy this one too. I'm hoping for Fear Effect: Retro Helix being released too and who knows Fear Effect: Inferno? A man can dream. And PLEASE, add the option to UPSCALE the graphics!!!
More than anything this is a recommendation of this port as the best version of the game to play. The features aren't extensive but they get the job done, like the CRT filter, the quicksave options, the rewind (we'll get back to that one), and the advanced movement options. Normally I'm a tank control purist but honestly I think modern controls work a bit better in an action-heavy game like this. I think Fear Effect is pretty good, for the most part. A lot of great ideas and innovative visual techniques that are held back by the severe clash between the RE style controls and the Jon Woo inspired gunfights. Most encounters are going to be with gun-toting humans, and as the game goes on that can grow increasingly complicated. There are several sections in which you'll need to mow down a wave of enemies all at once. Generally speaking, I think the combat is the weakest part of the game, which is unfortunate since you're doing it for most of the game. Guns do feel pretty good but the ta...
Fear Effect was originally released in 2000 on the Playstation, and 25 years later, it remains one of my absolute favorite games of all time. In my opinion, this game is a masterpiece. At its heart, Fear Effect is a gritty neo-noir cyberpunk action story with horror elements, that draws heavily from Chinese mythology. It follows a band of three mercenaries as they search for the missing daughter of a powerful businessman, hoping to collect the bounty. There is so, so much to love about this game. The writing is incredible, with each of the three playable characters having a strong and distinct personality brought to life by fantastic voice acting. The real heart is the wonderful chemistry between the three protagonists. The story goes to dark places in a way that feels earned, and doesn't come across as forced or edgy just for the sake of it. The environments you'll traverse are varied and fantastic, and the game feels effortlessly alive in ways that are hard to e...
Freakin' sick! Been wanting a PC release of this for ages. Works great with a controller. Not much more you can ask for with a straight-release of a PSX-era classic like this one!
Refunded in 5 minutes. Looks terrible on a 4K TV. Better play the original PS1 game with Duckstation Emulator @ 4K. Looks way better!
Maaaaaaaaan. Ya'll don't even know, but this was my $hit back in the day. Back in the day, when everyone was focused on Lara Croft and her excellent pair, I was focused more on that sexy femme fatale Hana Tsu-Vachel, and later on her girlfriend Rain. Hope we get the sequel too. The world isn't ready for Hana and Rain, but I am. Funny shit aside, this is a gem. One of the first MATURE games I can recall. This game had cursing and strong sexual themes (one puzzle solution is exposing yourself to an enemy to proceed. The sequel has you have lesbian sex with your girlfriend in an elevator as a distraction) when no other game at the time really did. I am so happy this got re-released, and I hope this game gets either a remake, sequel, remaster, or SOMETHING in the future.
