This is the most experimental FF I've ever played and is vastly different to XIII and XIII-2.
Positives (mostly)
Combat - in prequels you could just roll your face on auto-battle button and win in most cases, here though you are always active in your decision making, you have guarding and perfect guarding to mitigate partial or all damage, you also have "perfect attacks", not many people even notice it, cause you get bombarded with tutorials in the beginning. I highly recommend going to datalog and rereading tutorials once you have the grasp of the game, cause you might miss some combat nuances. Enemies aren't pushovers either, I've played on normal difficulty and the challenge level is much higher than I expected. Since the game gives you full freedom after the initial "tutorial day" you can visit places where you'll meet tough enemies that will wipe the floor with you, even if you go on a main quest initially you'll meet such enemies that it's better to run away or avoid th...

A very curious and experimental, but ultimately fun and rewarding final fantasy game. I played the first game of the XIII trilogy to completion, but very little of the second. After roughly 90 hours spent, I can say that: - This is one of the most fun combat models in a final fantasy game I've ever seen. 12 fully customizable ability slots across 3 presets which u can switch between freely in battle, each with their own stamina bar. Perfect Guarding enemy attacks is satisfying, engaging and actually forces you to watch and react to what the enemy is doing. - The story is great and the FFXIII trilogy as a whole is concluded well enough here. - There are over 80 outfits to collect, each of which can be dyed in different parts, on top of modular cosmetics. You are almost never able to customize character appearance in any final fantasy game, never mind including in the cutscenes too. - Many cool easter eggs, returning characters from both the first and second games, and references all ov...

I just finished FFXIII: Lightning Returns on easy mode and hard mode, and I have mixed feelings about it. First of all, despite being the last game of the series, it's the first that actually has Lightning as protagonist, and that's a good thing. Her behavior and coolness reminds a lot Cloud from FFVII Remake. The combat system of Lightning Returns is completely different from the first two games. It reminds Dark Souls a bit, We can only play with Lightning. The game has a garb system, reminding the dress system from FFX-2, but the skills are fully customizable and we can use 3 different garb sets at a time, each one using their own ATB charges. We play the game against a timer, it's 13 in-game days, and that may cause panic for new players, specially if they want to clear 100% of the game. The use of a guide for a first playthrough is recommended. While the main questline is pretty much straightforward, there are a lot of discovery to do in the side-quests and there are no map marke...

Let me start off by saying this as someone who played the 360 version at the time: This is not a good port. Despite remembering it being touted as the best port out of the FF XIII trilogy, given the limited of graphics options and limited framerates (capped at 60 FPS), it actually performs worse now, as the stuters in the "open world" are still happening and are even more noticeable at a higher framerate cap. On top of that, the port lacks Lightning's battle opening quotes like "Light and shadow dance together", and IIRC, just battle quotes in general. However... This is all counterbalanced by the game itself being one of the most fun experiences I've had in an RPG. People griping about the time mechanic and how you need to experience a Game Over to finish the game are absolutely wrong. If anything, the game is way too lenient on time, not to the extent of the Shenmue series of course (where you have to REALLY try to waste time), but still, it's to the point where you may finish ...

Amazing game and a great wrap up to the trilogy. It plays very differently from any FF with its closest being the recent XVI. its more of an action game. My biggest advice is DO NOT STRESS THE TIME LIMIT. Anyone whose played will tell you that this game gives you so much time you will most likely spend the last couple days just killing time. Focus on the main story, it gives you good direction and is easy to follow. In downtime try and do w.e side quest you come across but do not hyper focus on doing them all on your first play through as that can lead to some pointless stress. Do some here and there and anytime you are not sure if you have the time to do anything just make a separate save and if you go past whatever time you can always reload. Safety saves are you best friend in this game. Also just because you do not gain stats from fighting monsters doesn't make them a waste of time. Time doesn't advance in combat and you regen ER from battles and get gil, items, and skills that you...

As fan of Final fantasy series I can't recommend this game. If you want to play in this game then buy it on the sale. Battle system isn't bad, but story sometimes gives me a little bit doze of "PTSD". Gameplay: 6/10 Story: 4/10 Soundtrack: 6/10 Graphics: 7/10 Overall: 5.75/10
