Inspired by Deus Ex, the balancing how you talk to characters is interesting and means you can be hated by colleagues or liked which is neat. The combat and stealth mechanics are good though you need to balance when to use both to progress. I stopped playing as most missions felt the same after a while go here, collect this, kill them, kill suprise backup.. get criticised or praised, cue sarcastic comment. Rinse and repeat. However despite that I really like the game, its well made and the story is interesting enough that and may come back to it eventually just to see it through,
I love this game, the plot and narrative are exactly the kind of thing you'd expect from folks behind Mass Effect and New Vegas. It's got good pacing, and doesn't take forever to get through. Plus, there's enough agency (ho ho) and multiple choices to make replays worthwhile. Channel your inner Bond, let out your Jason Bourne, or just Archer it up the whole way through. Sometimes annoying the hell out of people will actually get you better results. When a lot of people say they don't like the combat, they're treating shooting like Splinter Cell or MGSV would - that if you line up a shot on a head, it would hit. Alpha Protocol is an RPG, so your stats affect how effective shooting actually is. If you've put nothing into pistols, it's going to go all over the place, otherwise you'd never need a reason to upgrade it.
The game is pretty okay, but great. The shooting mechanism can be a problem when hitting your target, but it depends on how many points you put in after you've ranked up. The sniper part, however, is extremely hard to aim. And don't forget the puzzles. I have no problem with the keypad/alarm puzzle and the lockpicking, but the hacking part is really the worse. Though the song Turn Up The Radio by Autograph played in one of the boss battles really pumps me up and plays rent-free in my head.
even for the year it came out, this game is pretty rough. the options menu is extremely basic, the movement is jerky, shooting feels... off, etc. what did make me laugh was how it had almost the exact same opening as mass effect 2, pure coincidence i'm sure, but funny. what killed it for me was the hacking mini-game, it made absolutely no sense, and I gave up during the tutorial. maybe it gets better, but I won't try again until a sale of at least 50% off
This is still the most underrated game in history. It's so good, with its multiple outcomes and and story twists, that you decide. It's simple and basic enough for a casual player, but there's enough depth you can really dive into it too. This game needs a remaster and a sequel. Maybe a better PR team so people can hear about it.
This game is way worse than I thought it was going to be. I should have listened to the reviews from back in the day instead of all these positive steam reviews. The game play is awful, especially the shooting and the story is just as bad.
It feels like this game wants to be Metal Gear Solid minus the over-the-top story and crazy characters. Unfortunately what's left is just a very OK game. Few things in the game are terrible but nothing really stands out about it. Unfortunately that means there are just better games you should play instead: the Metal Gear Solid series and the Mass Effect series in particular.
I've never seen a game with such a strange dichotomy. it's a spy game but it has the most inconsistent AI that I've ever seen, one second they're completely blind and the other second they flush you out with a grenade while you're hiding in a corner 50 miles away. The way they deemphasized gun play was a baffling design choice, Alpha Protocol just makes its guns horribly inaccurate but it also has boss fights that throw away everything you learned and make you have a tough time with shooting them WITH THE HORRIBLY INACCURATE GUNS. The game has three really terrible puzzle mini-games that gave me anxiety attacks with how complex and short timed they are, absolutely not what I want in video games THE QUICK SAVING SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK, IF YOU QUICK SAVE IN A CERTAIN SPOT IT DOESN'T MATTER, YOU GO BACK TO WHEN THE GAME HAS A CHECKPOINT FOR YOU, I'VE NEVER SEEN A GAME DO THIS IN MY LIFE AND MADE ME LOSE 3 HOURS OF PROGRESS COMBINED AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH The amazing role play options and...
Too bland, even for its time... also shooting is SO bad!
