I originally played the first game about 3-4 years ago, it was probably one of the best H-games I have ever played to date. Following this, I stumbled across this by accident trying to find the old game to re-live the adventure. I can honestly say this has been one of the best experiences I've had with any H-game period. It kept me engaged with the story while also providing content that I obviously bought the game for. Not only that, you're getting 2 stories for the price of one, don't want to spoil too much though.
Pretty good sequel. While I fully recommend playing the 1st game before playing the second game, I also don't recommend picking it up immediately after. Maybe wait a week or two. The second game starts with you forcibly sucked into an alternate universe from the first game, where the world has gone to heck, characters now have completely different fates and you basically have to build new relationships from scratch while adjusting to a familiar but different world where everyone is living much bleaker/cynical lives.
As a double major in history & philosophy, I can confirm that the game has quite indeed the interesting story with existentialist themes.
