It's incredibly moving and it's really, really rough to get through, but in the way that games are uniquely positioned to accomplish with playable narratives. Play it knowing as little as possible.

About This Game

and Roger is an interactive novel that lets you see through the protagonist's eyes—whether what she sees makes sense or not. It is comprised of three chapters and can be played in its entirety in about one hour.
Story
It's just another morning for this young girl. She wakes up and starts getting herself ready while shaking off the sleepiness like always. Except something, somehow, feels off.
When she steps into the living room, she expects to find her dad preparing for work. Instead, she finds a stranger sleeping on the couch.
The man wakes up, looks at the girl, and sighs. Ignoring her confusion, he mumbles to himself with a hint of sadness in his voice.
Scared, the girl runs. She must leave the house.

She doesn't know who this man is or where her father has gone.
Walk alongside her on this twisting, twisted path and see where it will lead her.

In all my years of gaming I've never played something quite like this. The subject matter is rather personal to me. And I'm sure it will resonate very strongly with others who have also experienced this issue. Go in blind. Or as much as possible. Some of the images on the Steam page give you the puzzle pieces, so I was pretty sure what the subject matter was. And the game still gut punched me. Truly a short, beautiful and bittersweet story.
Another great game featuring a poignant visual story and unique gameplay with some interesting twists. The game is priced at 5 euros and offers approximately 60 minutes of gameplay, possibly slightly less. It presents a beautifully crafted narrative and is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys visual novels, especially those involving small puzzles and interactive clicking.
Story as expected, but it doesn't matter. Simple interaction convey emotions is sweet.
It's a vow of love.
🤍 and Roger This one hits hard for me. It is so good. The visuals are stunning. It is a reminder that sometimes the way we love is different from the way our partner wants to be loved.
There is this famous scene in What Remains of Edith Finch. The ones with the fish and the daydream. I played that scene more than 8 years ago and I still think about it occasionally. It was the first time gameplay and mental state truly game together for me. It is one of the best scenes in any game. For a long time I did not think any scene in any game would be able to come close. and Roger is about adoration. About trying, failing, trying again, failing again, yet still trying. The inner drive to devote yourself to someone. All of this is seen from the perspective this affection is aimed at. To be loved. The game is also about the inability to fully reciprocate this love. You feel it in you, yet your are unable to show. And while you flail about, the other makes just one little move. Just right. Perfefect. And all of a sudden it works. In and Roger there is a scene where you frantically try to decide. The game makes it impossible to complete the task. Along comes the other, make...
A short but beautiful and emotional story. Go into this blind and prepare some tissues.
Damn, this is going to stick with me. What an absolutely beautiful game. Really clever use of the interaction mechanics for storytelling. I've played 100 hour + narrative games that didn't make me feel 0.001% of the emotion that this game is packing into its hour-ish runtime.
If the debate over whether games can be art is still ongoing, I think this is evidence to support that they can. It's easily one of the most affecting games--or, I suppose, "interactive novels"--that I've played in a long time. I would say either term applies; though it's a linear narrative, it relies on game-like mechanics to advance the story. Those mechanics are really very simple, but they complement the story extremely well, making it feel much more immediate without overshadowing it. (If you are especially spoiler-sensitive, do not reveal the following spoiler.) Admittedly, it hit especially hard for me because
I also have a family member who is gradually succumbing to dementia
, but I don't think its impact would be diminished even if that weren't the case. If you're still on the fence after this and all the other positive (and, at the time I'm writing this, equally vague) reviews, consider that you've probably spent more money and tim...
10/10 game. The story is truly outstanding, and the music is unforgettable. There’s no other game like it, carrying such a deep meaning.
