Vertical Slice
This Vertical Slice offers a glimpse into the core mechanics, design, art direction, and intended tone and gameplay of Lancelot. Currently being developed by a two-person team, it uses some pre-made 3D assets and animations. The art style and gameplay scope may evolve based on feedback from both gamers and potential investors.
Lancelot is a dark reimagining of Arthurian legend, placing Lancelot as the protagonist and casting King Arthur as the ultimate antagonist. The game unfolds over multiple chapters, each a grim retelling of key moments from Arthurian lore, focused particularly on Lancelot, Merlin, and Arthur himself. Players will experience familiar tales with a dark twist, immersing them in a world where legends and morality blur.
In pursuit of a streamlined RPG experience centered around mechanical depth rather than a multitude of items and builds, we’ve implemented unique systems that define Lancelot’s gameplay:
Lancelot and other entities in the game are bound by Cursed Armor, which grows on them, bestowing both power and peril. When defeated in combat, Lancelot can use the curse to revive and continue fighting. However, each revival increases his durability and damage output at the cost of his soul, pushing him closer to permanent death. This roguelike-inspired mechanic resets story progress if Lancelot succumbs completely, adding a layer of risk and intensity to each encounter.
Lancelot’s Stamina and Mana are merged into a single resource bar. Stamina is replenishable and powers his physical abilities, while Mana fuels his elemental abilities but cannot be replenished without sacrifice. This duality requires players to switch strategically between physical and magical states, balancing power with caution.
With a select arsenal, Lancelot can wield his weapons in various ways that tie into both the Cursed Armor and Elemental Affinity systems. A utility bar, filled through weapon use, offers additional options in combat and traversal, adding depth and variety to gameplay.
The story unfolds over a set number of days, with Lancelot’s choices affecting both combat encounters and world events. Certain enemies may be absent on specific days, offering easier progression at the cost of facing tougher encounters ahead. Environmental factors, like rain, also influence battles, for instance giving an edge against foes with fire affinity. This design introduces a dynamic layer of strategy, making each day’s choices impactful and nuanced.
