About This Game

Deirdre enters a dark Irish Forest to seek her husband who was sworn to become its King. Why would he have married her then? She needs to talk to him and demand an explanation. But it’s not so easy for a human to go through the magical Forest, as those who inhabit it live by different rules. What will she learn about the other world? What will she find out about herself?

5 unique endings

As you progress through the story, your choices influence Deirdre's fate. You can replay the game to open all five unique endings – they are saved in the main menu for you to track.

Soaked in Irish mythology

Loop is based on Irish mythology off the beaten path. There are stories and characters from the olden beliefs, half-forgotten.

Irish literature references

One of the characters and some dialogues are inspired by heartbreakingly beautiful Seamus Heaney’s bog poetry. Loop also includes quotes from the cryptic ‘Finnegans Wake’ by James Joyce.

Dark fantasy forest setting

The game setting takes after the classical Bilibin’s fairytale illustrations that left a strong legacy for the art that accompanies those stories today.

You get to talk to the Tree

Among all the quirky characters you meet, you will definitely have your favourites. But it's not that frequent you get to talk to a tree. And not just any tree, but The Tree. Will it think the way humans do? Will it participate in mortals' fates?

Loop is based on ancient Irish mythology with the folk of the sidhe, the main roads of Ireland and how they came to be, and shapeshifters. There are modern myths from the works of Seamus Heaney and James Joyce, too. You don't have to know anything about any of that to enjoy the game. Myths have many shapes and are retold again and again through the lands and generations. This is one of those retellings, with something new and something old weaved into the tapestry of fates.

Loop has a classic visual novel gameplay for effortless immersion in the story. This is a short game for your perfect evening on your own.

Space or mouse click on the dialogue to move forward; mouse click on choices or objects on the screen.

This is an intriguing and philosophical game with beautiful graphics. However, it is very short and the interface is very basic. I got my first ending within 20 minutes of playing. I would go back and collect the other endings, but there is no saving and no skip button. This game is in dire need of a skip button. Honestly, I just don't feel like clicking through the text again. And I would have to do it a third time to get another ending. And a fourth to get another. It looks like the game has five endings in all. Give it a try if you don't mind click click clicking. I'm giving this a cautious recommended since it does look like some work was put into the game. This is the first time I wish Steam had that illusive neutral button the other reviewers keep mentioning. If the devs add a skip button I'll play through the other endings and edit my review.

I don’t want to comment on the story too much since that isn’t my main problem with the game, but just a few things about it. It kind of just starts - and kind of just ends. Maybe it’s because the game is intentionally short. I think some background before the game actually starts would be nice, as the main character just immediately goes into the forest to look for her husband once you open the game. I don’t care enough about the main character and her husband to care about the choices I make. Despite the game saying you don’t need any prior knowledge about Irish folklore/mythology to play this game, I think you do, otherwise it’ll fall flat for you (AKA, me). My first main problem is the absence of a save function. Every modern game should have a save function by default at this point. No amount of justification of “this game does not have a save/load menu intentionally” should justify not having a save function. I should have the freedom to save/load before in-game ...

I play visual novels occasionally, and this got me interested because of Irish mythology. Is it too embarrassing to admit that a video game made me cry? Loop did that! It’s a short story but cut right through to my heart! Story! Music! Everything worked well together. I will certainly come back to read/play it again to get other endings. And will look forward to more games from the studio.
