About This Game

Never Second in Rome is a turn-based historical game with RPG and management elements. You take the role of a Roman centurion in the army of Julius Caesar.

In a Republic dominating the Mediterranean World and yet shaken by internal strife, still traumatized by the horrors of the civil war that marked the previous generation, the arrival of a new governor in your province will initiate a succession of events that will ultimately define the future of Rome and its empire.

Starting right before the beginning of the Gallic War, you will assume command of a century in a newly raised legion.

Key features

  • In addition to the main character, you will control the small army unit in your charge, your century.

  • Train yourself and your century, appoint your staff and discover the most remarkable individuals at your service.

  • Fight and lead your legionaries in real historical battles relying on a complex system of intertwined stats.

  • Turn-based individual combat involving not only your main character, but also the soldiers under your command.

  • Text-based events and narrative sections with many Attribute and Skill checks.

  • Great care and attention to historical detail and accuracy.

Free demo available

You can download and play the free demo directly on Steam. It allows you to explore the first three chapters of the game at your own pace. I recommend trying it before you buy, it's the best way to find out whether this game is up your alley.

BIG fan of the first game but this one ... meh. For me the combat in the first one was ''better'', i don't need to see all the numbers rolling 6 times, just give me a % of chance i can hit. You probbably worked hard on on the new combat system but it just ain't it for me, goes for personal combat and legion combat. I was so hyped when u posted u are making the second game and I won't return this one as a sign of support for u. I don't know if only I am crying about the new combat but others are also not liking it can u scarp it and return the old one ?

I really cannot recommend this game. It's just flooded with features that either make no sense or are there to stop you progressing. For starts, Too many training options in camp and not enough distribution. There's no real way to balance early game if you wanna be able to fight and hold your own, you're going to fall behind on tasks and lose favour. The levelling format is weird too. What's with this 32 less than potential? Why over complicate things? Just put a level 1 to whatever in there. Everyone knows the higher level you are the slower you'll rank up. Please for the love of god remove the logs literally telling me about chance rolls, just a simple success or failure based off a skill would be better. It helps people know what they should be levelling without going through a million units of text most of which just repeat themselves. Bring back the pie chart too, give me a clearer idea of success of fail chance for an action as I don't know what your basing the + or - o...

Lacks something of the first. You'll always fail stuff cause you're forced to specialized and the battle system makes less sense than the battle system of the first game. In general its not very satisfying to play. I admire the premise and the scope but I am just not having fun.

I saw the negative reviews for the game but played the demo and like it. I bought the game and I am looking forward to the update for the rest of the campaign. This game is significantly different from a Legionary's Life since the focus is on the Century and not so much the Centurion. The only mechanic that I really want to see added is the ability to add points to your character creation from your previous play through like Legionary's Life had. Looking forward to the updates.

Although the game is VERY well thought out and so far polished, this game is very agitating and overall a lot less rewarding than the first game. I played through the chapters so far and I will probably complete the rest when they come out, but comparing this to the first game had me slightly disappointed. First, the combat system is so far pretty annoying. Unless your playing as the centurion you create at start it feels like youre either outmatched or is just impossible to make progress. And when you do have a slight advantage the AI will just spam the defense ability and then you have to hope and pray you can pass some rng checks for a feint or shield knock. Even though theres a ton more options compared to the first game I really was annoyed most of the time. The next thing that has me scratching my head is the camp phase. Remember in the first game where you could pick one thing to train? It's been revamped to where now you can allocate points into certain things you want to t...

I ADORE the first game (A Legionary's Life), one of a kind super niche game. However the super satisfying zero-to-hero replay-ability through meta progression is gone. Hopefully this will change in the future. No meta-progression in such a RNG heavy game is VERY punishing and kills motivation to try again. Aside from this, I love the depth of mechanics but the UI needs work. Also not a fan of having to play as other characters in combat, drags already slow combat out considerably and takes away from the sense of individual progression. Big fan of the dev and their unique vision, i'm just sad that the key concepts i loved in A Legionary's Life have not been included.

I bought this a while back, but the recent post has encouraged me to share my opinion. While this game is certainly quite a bit different from A Legionary's Life, I love it just as much. In fact, I personally prefer this game by a large margin. The battle mechanics have changed substantially and, in my opinion, they are much more engaging. I would highly recommend trying the demo before you buy, since it gives you a very good idea of what the game will be like. Don't be lazy. Stop reading and go play the demo.

Very fun indeed. The older brother of A Legionaries Life. The writing could use a little thinning but it evokes theater of the mind.
