About This Game

The classic DRL is getting its commercial Steam release with updated gameplay and Jupiter Hell-based expansion!

After over 11 years in hiatus ChaosForge resumes development on its original turn-based roguelike shooter, DRL. We're updating the game's mechanics, environments, content, graphics and changing the setting to match the one featured in its acclaimed remake - Jupiter Hell - and bringing the game to Steam players, as a fully-featured commercial spin-off/total-conversion, under the name Jupiter Hell Classic!

The original DRL remains free on the ChaosForge website and will continue to receive updates alongside the new Jupiter Hell Classic version. Jupiter Hell Classic is continuing development of the entire series, now spanning over 20 years.

What to expect from Jupiter Hell Classic:

  • Classic, unforgiving, top-down, grid-based roguelike gameplay

  • Fast and fluid ranged based tactical combat

  • Control via keyboard only, mouse + keyboard or gamepad

  • Diagonal movement along movement based tactics

  • Environmental destruction and interaction

  • 4 episodes, almost 200 items, 25+ enemies

  • 30+ crafting assemblies, 3 classes with 5 master traits each (subclasses)

  • Steam Workshop support for all your nostalgia modding needs!

The demake of a remake of a roguelike unmake of a famous 1993 FPS shooter.

Read that again, let it sink in. The lore might be a bit confusing at first, but it all makes sense.

First, there was that legendary hell-shooter from the '90s. Then, in 2002, came a turn-based fan project that reimagined that chaos as a roguelike - fast, brutal, and built for coffee breaks. And players saw that it was good. For 14 glorious years, it brought turn-based carnage to a devoted fanbase.

Then, in 2016, came the un-making. The hell-hordes of lawyers descended on the game and all that was left was three lettersD R L. Was it still good, though? Hell yeah. And then, in 2019, came Jupiter Hell. The modern(ish) remake. Still with us? Remake of the unmake.

The year is 2024, and it's sure as hell time for the story to go full-circle with another demake. Jupiter Hell Classic, the demake of the remake of the unmake of the 2002 legendary roguelike that proved fast-paced action belongs in a turn-based RPG.

Played a ton of DRL back in the day, this game carries over the polished and snappy feel of that game while making things prettier and more accessible to modern hardware. That's probably enough to sell some of you. The rest of you: It's a quick playing turn based moonhell shooter, but with added depth and lots of interesting choices to make. It's not hella complicated, there's just plenty of meat on the bone. You'll continually surprise yourself with new discoveries as you play more, get better, and die deeper in the game's myriad collection of moonhell dungeons. Cool and impactful loot, bad guys that run the gamut from mindless grunts to seriously challenging hell royalty, and a combat system that keeps you engaged. Looks and sounds fantastic.

after about 4 runs over 10 hours, can safely say there's not near enough randomization or content to keep this interesting as a roguelike. I have only vague memories of DoomRL at this point, but I also dont remember paying for that one. Maybe better after a few major updates but until then I'd say pass

So so glad this is back and better, as DRL was the trad roguelike that finally make trad roguelikes really click with me. JHC has all the immediacy of DRL, jump straight into the action and start shotgunning formers and demons, with such a smooth and easy control and readable gameplay that before you long playing the game feels like second nature. The controller control scheme is excellent, it's really quick to get fluid movement, while at the same time encouraging that measured thoughtful play that roguelike benefit from so much (though is still has that DRL/JH rush that means you get over your head happily blasting away demons until hubris nearly gets you killed!) The best thing is knowing Kornel this is just the start, given the 20 years of support DRL had, the many years of updated JH had, this game is going to hopefully keep Kornel employed making it better for a few years yet! Can't wait to see more things from JH reimagined in this format, while at the same time seeing what ...

One of few exceptions to my "Never early access", the other being Project Zomboid. Jupiter Hell, and DLR, are some of my all-time favorite roguelikes, and honestly, as much as I enjoyed Jupiter Hell, DRL was always my go-to roguelike. Even after JH released, I still played DRL almost more than JH. With JHC, I gave the demo a whirl and was instantly transported back into my DRL boots and it was an absolute giga blast of fun. I literally don't care if JHC doesn't get a single additional hour of development time. It's already everything I wanted. ChaosForge understands both was make roguelikes great, engaging and difficult, but most above all: fun. I've played so. many. roguelikes. and what the vast majority misses is the "fun". Far too many of them are "forever" games, like SotS: The Pit, for instance. It's an absolute torment for a new player, and unless it's the literal only game you play, and you devote 500+ hours to it, you're just not going to enjoy it. JHC on the other hand, fo...

If you do not know the legendary DRL: when roguelike developers were mostly making huge, extremely complex, 20+ hour long games, DRL was a relatively simple one with short runs, so Spelunky and all short rogueish games basically take from it. Out of the short roguelikes, it is still the one I had the most fun with. DOOM but where you control the flow of time, with a great turn-based dodging system! And JHC is a greatly improved version of it. (version = based on the same engine, it is clearly a game on its own) Would love to have an option of the mini-map using ASCII.
