I was so excited that this was re released, apparently to run on new systems (see recommended OS- Windows 11). However, once I started the game and tried to get the various windows set up, then my excitement evaporated. If I got a game window too close to the bottom of the screen, that window disappeared and couldn't be brought back without tiling all the other game windows and having to rearrange and size all the game windows again. Also, the first time I exchanged missiles with the enemy forces, the game froze up. The game also crashed on me multiple times. I even tried compatibility mode, but nothing helped. I want this game to work on new systems. I have played various versions of the game for many years and was excited that it was being re released. However, at least for me, it doesn't work and just left me disappointed.

bought it at once looks good the windows look polished game runs well so far ran a giuk mission with planes, subs and ships with no hiccups or crashes don't expect fancy things like "mouse wheel to zoom" or "right click to re center map" the group and unit report window is resize-able as are the theater and tactical windows will update as i play more spoiler alert: it's worth the 7 dollars
I have been waiting forever for this to come out on Steam. It's out now and it crashes. Not only does it crash, but it somehow corrupts my saved game so I can't even start from a previous save. Why is everything junk now? It's like everything is made to not work and we're supposed to just except it as junk and that's the way it is. Do they not play these games before they release them? It's not just Harpoon, it's nearly all these old games they decide to re-release to steal our money and give us junk that doesn't work. $$$ grab.
Look and feel of the classic Harpoon. Screens, windows, sound are all the same with no notable upgrades or enhancements. As the title states, Harpoon Classic 97.
As someone familiar with naval sims but never played Harpoon before, I can see its appeal as a middle-way approach to simulation/war gaming. For those more used to typical RTS games, Harpoon forces you to work with limited resources and long distances. You need to think about where to engage/disengage, how many assets to risk, how much ammunition to expend, etc. There is less emphasis on output per second or clicking as fast as you can. Units are not mass-produced. Every piece counts, and protecting a couple more troop transports or neutralizing one more enemy cruiser can be a significant win. This is usually reflected in each scenario's backstory and objectives. === Graphics === Pros: reportedly needs less than 8 MB of RAM Cons: the visual appeal of an educational software from the 1990s === Realism === Pros: simulated ammo and air fuel capacity, EMCON, radar horizon, subsystem damage, thermolayers, sensor and weapon envelope, nuclear authorization and warhead...
Drops out a lot and has problems on my ultrawide 21.9 screen.
I've played every version of the computer version. I can still play this version with original copies BUT the font is all messed up on my original versions. So this is great. I haven't had any crashes yet or hang ups. It's less than $8 and worth it just to be able to read the font. Lots of content here. Very happy. Want to put out every single version I'll buy them all again. Love this game.
This is just the original 1997 game for Win95 which has been ported to Steam. A number of features doe not work because they were made for a Win95 environment and have not been ported to the Win10/11 environment. These features include all forms of ingame help which should be available from the game menus but are 'not available' and the scenario editor which is a 16-bit application which cannor run under Win10/11 without installing external tools to enable 16-bit applications. Seems to just be a moneygrab by Microprose.... I've applied for a refund!
I was an external beta tester for this when it was released so I was excited to try it again. I loaded the first Med Sea scenario, got a surface group contact and crashed the game within 3 minutes. Just like old times! When the page says "redesigned control interface" it doesn't mean it's been updated for this steam release - it means that in 1996 it was redesigned from the Dos version. Still, at least I can run it again. I'm putting recommend as Yes for now but if the crashing continues that will switch to no.
A long awaited classic and a good start. I have questions regarding how to open the scenario editor, but overall game play is authentic. A bit small on a 1440p but acceptable on 1080. The 1.63d update within two days of the game's release is a good sign. I've been playing Harpoon for decades and would definitely recommend this game
