About This Game

The Beginner's Guide is a narrative video game from Davey Wreden, the creator of The Stanley Parable. It lasts about an hour and a half and has no traditional mechanics, no goals or objectives. Instead, it tells the story of a person struggling to deal with something they do not understand.

I don't really know what I feel after this game. I mean, I was playing all along being sure that the story, I am involving in, is a real story... But at the end of all, I'm not sure. I'll check it, of course, but after posting my thought. I don't even know why am I doing it, but It is first time, that game without any mechanics, without any gameplay, left such a big hole inside me. It was like reading an interactive book. I was so close to crying in a few moments, and for me, it is a big plus for story. Sometimes I was associating myself with the Coda, partly because I'm a game developer myself, and I have some works unrelated with game dev, too... and sometimes I was associating myself with the storyteller (Dave?) mostly because of his desire to help others and solve their "problems", not always realizing that this is not required... and I feel like I really can feel the pain, the feelings and thoughts of both of them... or maybe I'm wrong, just like the storyteller was. I also though...

Damn. I can understand all the negative reviews. Definitely won't work for everyone. Worked for me though.

Nothing can be said about this game to someone who hasn't played it which doesn't risk ruining the experience. Just play it.

I found this game a few days ago, thinking it was going to be similar to the game, Stanley Parable (Another game made my Davey Wreden), but I was mistaken. The structures of the games are very similar, but The Beginners Guide focused on something much more. If you're entertained by listening to stories and emotional narratives, this game is just for you, but if your expecting choices and a lot to be done, I doubt this will be the game for you. Its a fast game, taking 2.5 hours at most, but has great powerful messages that words alone cannot describe. I've never written a review, but this game deserved it. It brought me to tears.

…please, help me. Please give me- some of whatever it is that makes you complete, I want whatever that wholeness is that you summoned out of nothing and you put into your work; you were complete in some way that I never was. I want to know how to be a good person, I want to know how not to hate myself, please. I’m fading. And all I want is to know that I’m going to be okay.

Every game developer should play this once. Recommended if you are into Game Design philosophy.

Games are pieces of artwork - nothing more, nothing less. They can be very immersive, sure, much more than a film - and a film is much more immersive than a painting - but at the end of the day, they all share the same roots. Nowhere is this concept better and more purely illustrated than in The Beginner's Guide - an adventure through nonsensical, unintuitive, and often sacred geometry with game design decisions that often whittle gameplay down to feel the full weight of what you're doing - running through simple geometry, with a hope of some extrinsic reward no game has been able to give. The story, then, is narrated by an average gamer, who would give you a shortcut to each "reward", or its absence, thus whittling away the struggle and thus the entire artfulness of each piece. It's a really unique experience, and absolutely worth playing once. Don't delve in with spoilers, just play it.
