About This Game

You were warned not to dig too deep; there was no need to go further. A rabbit's life is comfortable without the extra effort. But something—subtle, yet unrelenting—pulled at a hidden space in your mind. It seemed like a waste of time, but you felt compelled to keep going—until the tunnel, once your safest refuge, collapsed beneath you. Air rushes past as you fall, and when you look up, the Broken Ceiling fades into the darkness.
Driven by compulsion, the protagonist burrows far too deep and falls through the ceiling of a massive underground void, descending into a darkness that isn't truly darkness, where powerful and incomprehensible beings reside. Unwittingly, the player becomes the key to unlocking the prison that holds these beings, trapped after a failed coup to overthrow their cosmic ruler.

In this hand-drawn adventure, use your keyboard or game controller to:
Explore caverns teeming with cosmic entities, whose very presence threatens to shatter your mind and wither your body.
Use your lantern to carve and opening through the darkness and reveal secrets hidden deep within the unknown. But beware—the darkness is more than it seems, draining the power that sustains your fragile light. Recharging your lantern frequently is essential to survival—it is your lifeline, your health.

Decipher clues left behind by the entity that imprisoned the beings within these caverns.
Collect items that will help you solve the caverns' mysteries and, ultimately, open the prison gates, releasing the inmates back into the cosmos.
And always keep moving.

'The Broken Ceiling' is a short 2D eldritch exploration game that can be played through in a single ~1h session. On its strong side, it manages to create more tension than I anticipated. A core mechanic is
managing your lantern fuel. Let it burn down, and you succumb to madness. Failing is heavily sentenced with restarting the game all over. This two-edged, controverse mechanic works for this particular game due to its short length. There are many roguelikes where a single run takes more time.
The artstyle has a big recognition factor and stays consistently on a high, and very creative level. The small viewing distance pairs well with the huge amount of unique assets that keeps your surroundings fresh at all times. Together with
the limited lantern fuel, which forces you to stay near safe spots and keeps you from wandering to far off
it made me long to explore the whole cave all the more, while keeping me on edge, even without
any enemie...
