It says it right in the store page description: "clumsy" platformer. I get where the positive reactions are coming from, but it is a finnicky annoying precision platformer first and foremost. One with slow respawn animations and one that regularly puts you back one or two screens, because checkpoint just happens to be there. The first few "a-ha" moments are pretty cool, but the rest of it is just mostly annoyance. I did not bother finishing the final sequence.

The core idea is fairly interesting and I appreciate what this game tries to do but I find that this game's lethal jumps clash horribly with my muscle memory. The first 28 pages make for a pretty decent experience with some caveats like excessive backtracking, but I found getting the 29th page confusing, frustrating and overall a pretty terrible experience. Half the time I wasn't sure I was even going in the right direction. Having a map would've done wonders for this game in general, pretty sure it would've been enough to make me like it in fact. Some times you can walk or jump through blocks and it feels poorly telegraphed. I felt I couldn't really intuit anything by looking. The game introduces a grid to count tiles to try to help you deal with the clarity issues but perhaps some visual improvements may have made it so you didn't need the grid in the first place? If you're interested in game design maaaaaybe give it a shot for the first half.

Surprisingly clever, I loved it! The reveal of the mechanics was perfect and the level design was very well thought out. 100% worth the playthrough.

Fantastic and clever little puzzle platforming game. The appeal of Leap Year is in discovering game mechanics and exploring, more so than the actual platforming which is quite easy. There's an elegance in the design that makes figuring out the mechanics extremely satisfying, but it's hard to describe without spoiling things so I'll just recommend that you play it.

While I don't normally enjoy these kind of "start the game with all of the abilities, but it's up to you to discover them" games, this one really works! Some of puzzles are very clever, and doubly so once you hit the end game reveal! Grade: A+ DLC: While the base game ramps up in difficulty with only a few seriously complicated puzzles, this one starts out end-game hard and gets harder from there. The area also feels bigger and in desperate need of a map. Grade: B-
