An interesting representation of Battle City from my childhood, made in a Ukrainian style, that at the same time depicts the russian invasion in Ukraine during its first year. Developed by Ukrainian developer, no russian localization in game.

About This Game

Threads of War is a fusion of Battle City mechanics and rogue-lite map progression.
Ukraine is under attack by mechanized hordes of unclean forces: weak but numerous demons, fast werewolves, and heavy monsters. Become one of the hundreds of thousands of warriors of light who rose to defend their families, their homeland, and their future. The game tells the story of how Ukrainian territories were liberated during the first year of the war: from Hostomel to Kherson.
The game was developed by two Ukrainians - a father and son - who aimed to convey the story of Ukraine’s liberation in this brutal modern war through metaphors, folklore imagery, and traditional Ukrainian embroidery.
At the same time, our top priority is engaging gameplay. Thanks to extensive development experience (the father is the game designer behind Football, Tactics & Glory), we improved the outdated Battle City mechanics and made them compelling for modern players.
25% of the earnings will be donated to trusted units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces for urgent needs.

The game not only entertains but also reflects our view of the war. Behind each tank icon lies a human life - a person who lived, dreamed, worked, and loved. War means countless human tragedies, and through its mechanics, the game allows players to feel that reality.

We took the core of Battle City, kept its fun elements, but modernized and enriched it with new mechanics like ammo collection, passive and active bonuses, boss battles, and more. We've also created enemies with unique behaviors. As a result, you get endless variety: enemy tank combinations create new challenges, bonus synergies generate fresh combat strategies, and location generators make each battle unique.

After each level, you decide how to progress on the map. Some areas may have valuable bonuses, some let you buy missing shields, and others may allow you to avoid a battle. The map lets you optimize your route based on your playstyle. After each run, you gain experience that unlocks new active and passive bonuses.

In the game, you'll pass through key cities liberated by the Ukrainian army in 2022: liberate the north of Ukraine, take part in the Kharkiv counteroffensive, and drive the enemy from the right bank of the Kherson region.

The game features a cooperative campaign for two players. After completing each level, the player with the higher score gets to choose a bonus first. This can lead to fun and competitive moments between you and your partner. You’ll support each other, steal upgrades from under each other’s noses, and compete for points.
You can unleash your creativity and build your own level. Not only can you design the layout, but you can also place ammo and bonuses, and set the number and types of enemies.

An engaging game that’s well worth its (modest) price. The music is delightful, and the gameplay is simple yet thoughtfully designed. Definitely has the Battle City vibe for those who played it back in the day on NES. If you enjoy games of this genre, it's a safe bet you'll like this one.
It is fun to play, the mechanics are well thought through and the aesthetics fit very well! Edit: My previous issue was addressed in the latest patch, thank you dev :)
Checked out this game in 2024 GameOn in Lithuania and have been waiting for the relase. Glad it is here now. Great interpretation of one of the classics. Looks beatiful and plays well. Love the music, the presentation, and the message.
A nice retro Battle City like game with an Ukrainian cultural flavor. It takes a few levels before the strategic depth starts to show. Slava Ukraini!
Surpsingly good, I would even say true hidden gem. Don’t let it simple look fool you – it is way more than just a BattleCity reskin. In that rough looking, 8Bit format we have semi-realistic modern tank battles with artillery support, mines, drones and infantry. You need to watch your ammo reserve, use covers and ambush tactics instead of trying to simply outshoot your enemies. The game even has some Rogue-lite elements with upgrades randomization and such. Way deeper and fun than it looks. Totally recommend
I have fond memories playing this type of game on my old phone. This game is a greatly upgraded version of old classic with thematic overtone. You have beautiful style, progression and upgrades, story in the style of old DOOM games (but sadly based on horrifying reality), interesting maps and enemies. Recommend for all players who are interested in this old school tank games.
This is probably the best top-down tank game I've ever played. Runs great on the Deck. Gameplay is a lot of fun. The game's presentation and art style are uncompromisingly soulful and wholesome while providing loads of tank action. The level editor provides infinite replayability. I used to play Battle City often, and Threads of War has the playstyle but offers a truly great atmosphere while telling a true, harrowing story in a family-friendly way. I'm also proud to support the devs and the defenders of Ukraine by buying this game, which gets ten out of ten stolen washing machines as my rating. Glory to the heroes! 🇺🇦
Works great on the deck. Tip though: use the dpad not the stick to move, it's too easy to accidentally turn the wrong way at the vital moment. Feels more NES controller that way anyway! I can see from the leaderboard I'm still *terrible* at this after 90 minutes but keep coming back for one more run and every step further brings another layer of complexity. The game rewards tactical thinking, with ambushes and traps seemingly important, but then they throw in drones so you have to rush to take out the command centre, artillery you have to figure out how to work around and upgrades that can completely change your play style (ie shoot over walls, snipe from distance, pontoon over rivers etc etc. and then out of nowhere one of the little bastards has sneaked being you unnoticed and is closing down on your hq! I'm looking forward to getting one step further and finding some other new barrier to overcome. Brings me back to 8-bit gaming, where a seemingly simple concept is rolled into a t...
The game has exciting tank battles and the tributes to the people who defend their homeland create an immersive atmosphere. The music is wonderful as well. I can't get Oi u luzi chervona kalyna out of my head anymore.
