This game sees you play as a silent protagonist through a linear singleplayer in the Metro. It's a basic shooter and doubles down by keeping itself pretty tight in scope. These restrictions however amplify what the game is really good at, which is immersion. You aren't inundated with tons of lore and dialogue. You also don't get to really explore wide open levels. Instead, you are focused on the micro adjustments to better your survival odds like changing your weapon, keeping a charge on your equipment, and making sure your mask is clear from condensate or blood. This really keeps you in the moment, and as a result, more influenced by the world building. While old and buggy, this game is still very enjoyable.

Finally after years and a handful of attempts, I've finished Metro 2033. I had originally planned to play through the Metro franchise earlier this year, but I was completely FPS'd out after finishing the Half Life franchise. Metro 2033 is a solid game. It is clearly influenced by Roadside Picnic which is one of my favorite world in all of media (and subsequently leads to some of the most interesting game worlds). The story is decent, but having read the book, it is lacking. The choice to make Artyom a silent protagonist is baffling to say the least as other characters awkwardly attempt to justify your silence as Artyom being stoic or paralyzed by fear. The game, even the Redux version, is old and that old age does show. Its not the best graphics, gunplay, or even optimized. And I did experience a handful of crashes and one bug that required me to restart a whole chapter that's apparently been in the game since the OG version in 2010 (per the Steam forums). It may sound like I'm being...
Game is surprisingly sophisticated for its time, redux or not. Mechanics perform very well, some geometry is invisible and cannot be navigated but I think it is either by design or meant to not be traversed. The outside levels sometimes provide these "burping," pipes likely for CO2 outflow from the livable areas of metro poking out of the rivers, do not attempt to jump on them to get from one side of the water to the other. These pipes cannot be jumped on (I will not contest mods that may or may not mitigate this). Story was good, I do not and still do not understand the "moral/morale points" that Artyom gets but they do affect certain action's outcomes and options which is nice. The sequel does not factor in your choices as it follows the book.
Metro 2033 is an atmospheric classic from 2013 that still holds a special place in post-apocalyptic gaming. Playing it again on Steam brought a rush of nostalgia—reminding me of Fallout 3 in its tone and pacing, yet standing apart with its own distinct style and setting. I originally played this on Xbox 360 years ago, but revisiting it now was like rediscovering an old favorite with fresh eyes. Graphically, it’s exactly what you’d expect from a 12-year-old title, and that’s not a bad thing. The world feels appropriately worn, frozen, and suffocating. Snow-drifted ruins, dim metro tunnels, and the constant grime of your cracked gas mask lens all contribute to the bleak, lived-in feel of a Moscow struggling to survive. For a game of its era, the environmental storytelling remains strong. The narrative is a focused, linear journey—more like a tightly guided Fallout 3 than an open-world sprawl. You leave the safety of the Metro on a mission to save it, gradually earning your pl...
Great story-driven game with a neat gameplay and graphics that is not too bad even 10+ after the release. A must-play if you missed it
unplayable for me on win11. Issues with resolutions not being detected that can be worked around with tweaking, but even with this fixed the game locks up and freezes for seconds at a time every minute or so. Guess ill be picking it up on console
Very good game with very unique atmosphere Do not rush playing this game and just finish it take your time, there is a lot of areas to explore (not open word ), listen to npcs dialogue, read the notes You will find yourself in a great adventure as for the cons : Running this game on modern hardware can be annoying - I couldn't select my native resolution (1440p), I fixed that by disabling G-sync - Later in the game you will encounter a lot of crashes and freezing and the only way to stop it is to disable SSAA Overall : 8/10
Quite a well-made game, different chapters have different feels and gameplay mechanics, not just mindless shooting
Its very good game i can feel the atmosphere of burnout and hoplessness
I consider launching nuclear bombs at my own city just to make this story true. (Already bought gas mask and found some Nazis and Communists).
