I've had this game in my library for close to a decade now but only now have I gotten around to playing it. In my opinion it's legitimately one of the best horror games I've ever played. It's full on psychological/existential horror in the finest sense. I can't find much fault in this game outside of the monster encounters perhaps becoming a slight eye-roll further in the game. Everything else is quite solid. The environments, the sound design, the characters, the writing, etc. This is one of those rare games that leave you pondering after the credits roll. I won't say too much but if you've ever questioned about matters of consciousness and what it means to be a human being on a biological/psychological/philosophical level, this game covers all those bases and then some. Highly recommend.

About This Game
The radio is dead, food is running out, and the machines have started to think they are people. Underwater facility PATHOS-II has suffered an intolerable isolation and we’re going to have to make some tough decisions. What can be done? What makes sense? What is left to fight for?
Enter the world of SOMA and face horrors buried deep beneath the ocean waves. Delve through locked terminals and secret documents to uncover the truth behind the chaos. Seek out the last remaining inhabitants and take part in the events that will ultimately shape the fate of the station. But be careful, danger lurks in every corner: corrupted humans, twisted creatures, insane robots, and even an inscrutable omnipresent A.I.
You will need to figure out how to deal with each one of them. Just remember there’s no fighting back, either you outsmart your enemies or you get ready to run.

A very profound story. Great atmosphere and sound design. Almost made me unironically cry of fear - I love it.

WELL…i will never stop thinking about this game. Okay firsts first, the gameplay is pretty engaging with interesting hands-on puzzles, the scary moments of this game are not only extremely effective but fill the entire runtime of the game, the characters feel so real, and the STORY..... THE STORY!! I went into this expecting a scary little amnesia-styled game taking place underwater but MAN, am I extremely glad it took so many steps ahead in crafting a memorable and crushing experience. When I finished it, I was speechless. Many questions stain in my mind with such depressing things to think about. LOOK. Certified 9.7/10. Every element is utilized to its fullest to make this an unforgettable horror game experience.
This game is a fucking masterpiece!! I would erase all my memories just to fully enjoy playing it again. It's definitely the best storyline among all horror games for me. I didn't think a game could make me think so deeply about the rightness of my own actions. What can be considered human? At what point does a person cease to be human?
I'm not a horror game player, especially in the "sneaking around being helpless" vein. I played about two hours of Amnesia. SOMA is nevertheless, for theme and atmosphere and worldbuilding and execution, one of my top ten *games*, full stop. Anyone with any attention span and any interest in ideas about consciousness, purpose, and identity - you *owe it* to yourself to play SOMA.
This game is very much a mixed bag. I'd say the strengths of this game are the atmosphere and design, the weaknesses navigation and, possibly controversial, the story. I have seen people praising this game for its story and saying they can't stop thinking about it and its ending. Well, for me, the idea is there but the story fell pretty flat and it didn't really impact me. Maybe also because I didn't find Simon enough of a convincing/interesting protagonist. For me the game was picking up once you get to Theta and you encounter more enemies. But until then there was a lot of just walking around, not really knowing where to go and what to do and this was kind of frustrating and not very fun to play. I guess it fits the theme of Simon waking up and being a bit lost but I almost quit the game because of it. That being said it is mainly a walking simulator with having to get random items and sections of hiding/running from/sneaking around monsters. One thing I liked about that is that yo...
Felt like Talos Principle a lot despite its not horror game.
If you are looking for an actual psychological and science fiction type of horror game this is perfect. Contains a lot of thalassophobia but in a perfectly scary way. Also it will start a spark of "What if?" question in your head. I honestly have to say this could be the only actual scary horror game that i really want to play again all sometimes. Quality at its finest.
Amazing atmosphere and story, highly recommend checking it out if you haven't already.
