Anno 1602 might be the foundation of the Anno series, but actually playing it today is an exercise in frustration. Terrible UI & Hidden Mechanics Repairs are buried in tiny buttons and never explained. Warships spin around uselessly, with clumsy firing arcs and awful pathfinding. Worst of all: ships must be manually loaded with cannons before they can fight — something the game never tells you. Bad Tutorial & Hints The campaign “tutorial” teaches almost nothing. It doesn’t mention that ports can’t defend themselves, that towers are weak, or that warships need equipping. Instead, players get punished for mechanics hidden behind bad UI. Pirates = Softlock Pirates spawn early with ships stronger than yours, blockade trade routes, and even a single pirate can sink your defenses.
