About This Game

China, 1570. China is under the reign of the Longqing Emperor, of the Ming Dynasty. He inherited a country in disarray after years of mismanagement and corruption. He resided in the Forbidden city, which was the seat of many emperors under the Ming Dynasty. Constructed from 1406 to 1420, the complex consists of 980 buildings and covers 72 ha (over 180 acres). It is also under the Ming Dynasty that the Great Wall of China was rebuilt, fortified, and expanded. Around this period, China was under heavy attack from the Mongols, so maintaining the Great Wall was essential. Most of what we now have left of the Great Wall, we owe to the Ming dynasty.

The country was already famous for its very intricate bureaucracy, but this also led to a lot of corruption. Even though the penalties for corruption were very high, the highest Officials of the Forbidden City would pretend to uphold the ban on corruption, by accepting gifts of petitioners, and returning one of seemingly lower value.

Gugong uses this extraordinary custom as its basis. Players take on the role of powerful Chinese families trying to gain influence and power by exchanging gifts with Officials. The gift cards you offer as a player have to be of a higher value than the one you receive, forcing you to make strategic choices regarding which actions you want to take each turn. You will travel around China, sail down the Grand Canal, purchase precious jade, help construct the Great Wall, secure advantages through decrees, influence the game through intrigue, and ultimately, receive an audience with the emperor.

In this App version of the board game you will play vs. Meng, the solo automata, with three different level of difficulty.
The App includes a short tutorial which explain the basic concepts of the game to help the player dive in immediately, and a full set of written rules.

Game Overview
“Gùgōng” is played in 4 rounds, representing 4 Days. Each Day consists of 3 Phases:
1. The Morning Phase, where players prepare the game for the coming Day.
2. The Day Phase, where players perform multiple actions. Players perform various actions by exchanging Gift Cards with the Officials working in the Forbidden City, represented by the 7 Card locations on the Game Board.
3. The Night Phase, where players check if they have successfully matched cards in their
discard pile with the Destiny Dice.
At the end of the 4th Day, players receive additional VP for the completion of the Great Wall, the level 3 Decrees, their arrival order in the Palace and their collection of Jade. The player with the most Victory Points at the end of the game is declared the most influential Chinese Family and wins the game.

Disappointed on the port of this game. The music is about a 6 second loop. There are not other sound effects when making or executing choices. The screen resolution is not adjustable. The destiny dice cannot be seen on the screen (even after supposed bug fix). Not nearly up to the quality of most game ports for this price. I'm looking for a refund.

The board game is a favorite of mine. So I was very happy to try it out. Unfortunately: 1. No save option 2. The game randomly freezes (you can still see your discard pile, rules, and quit). And since there is no save option, quitting will end the game. 3. The game is only the Solo variant. There is no AI opponents to play the regular game with. 4. The programming for the double worker seems off. When I retrieve a worker, it doesn't always give me the option of bringing back the double worker back from my general supply. (Unless I missed something in the rules) I hope the developer keeps fixing and improving the game or just let Dire Wolf do the digital app. I requested a refund after 30 minutes. Only the 3rd time I requested a refund in over 10 years.

After 4 games I can full recommend Gugong. Even though the digital implementation looks somewhat basic at first, it is actually very functional and, after you have learned the rules, it allows to easily play and enjoy this great game. Very smooth experience.

I was not sure if to buy the game or not because of the previous negative reviews. I did buy it because I like the board game and the relative low price of the game. It turned out that several of the negative comments and feature requests were fixed by the developer very quickly. The game allowed me to play vs Meng when I don’t have other people to play with. The UI is not too difficult for such a complex board game (the negative comment about Meng UI is minor in my opinion, I don’t think it deserves a negative review because of it). I enjoy playing Gugong vs Meng in the game so I’m giving it a positive review.

The digital version of Gugong is good, highly recommended. At first it might seem to not have all the bells and whistles like other games & a complicated user interface but keep in mind the board game is complicated as well, but after a few rounds it became very intuitive I like the board game and thought the game will allow me to improve my playing skills. Playing solo without the setup and having the game managing Meng moves makes everything much simpler and more enjoyable as well as allowing me to improve my skills in the game

My first review. This is absolutely the worst digital port of a board game I have ever played. I play a lot of digital adaptations of board games and understand that sometimes concessions need to be made, but this is just terrible. Any of the regular devs on BoardGameArena would have done a much better job. I love this game and would love to be able to play a decent adaptation of it, but this is not it.

The digital adaptation of this board game is disappointing and sloppy. The UI and resolution are strange, and the icons representing the digital opponent blend into the board, making them difficult to click. Both the tutorial and rules have room for improvment.
