a separate definitive edition comes out early 2026 with no upgrade path announced as of 08/21/25. don't buy besides that, i don't really care for this entry in the series too much. it seems like it'd be a really great time and scratch that Pirate Game-shaped itch that hasn't been filled for me in a long time, but then it kinda just is not that great. the ship combat is pretty clunky, the ground combat is alright but also feels clunky, and the story and characters are entirely uninteresting. the music is pretty awesome though. Ys VIII and IX are much better "modern" Ys games; I especially recommend VIII.

There’s a new definitive edition, Proud Nordics, coming out with QoL changes, rebalancing, and visual upgrades. No upgrade path for owners of this version. Don’t waste your money buying this when the developer clearly doesn’t care about its customers.

This is probably a skill issue on my part, but I've played all of the Ys games and it has always been a game I can chill out and bash monsters in. In Ys X the combat controls utilize all of the shoulder and face buttons the controller and no matter how I remap them I can't consistently execute what I want to do and I just can't get into this game. I'm either inadvertently switching characters or holding the Duo attack/Block trigger instead of the Skill attack trigger, or dodging instead of mana string, etc. This is made worse by how faced paced the enemies can be, there's too much going on at once. I thought maybe this game would simplify things moving away from the larger parties of the last few games to focus on just two characters but the result is even messier experience.

Amazing combat system, but only two playable characters? Oh, I forgot --- it's because it's part of the main plot of the horrible story. In my opinion, I don't recommend this game to new players in the series, simply because it's not as fun compared to the other entries. However, if you're already a fan of Ys, then go ahead and give it a try.

Without a doubt I have to give it a negative this time, please DO NOT BUY THIS GAME VERSION! After the first 2 chapters I've seen enough to feel some of the things are wrong, but I couldn't say for sure back then, and I also didn't want to go further. Turns out my hunch was correct when Ys X Proud, basically an Ultimate/Royal version was announced not even 1 year after the Western release. The good things is it adds contents to the game such as new areas, few new characters and stories related, and improve visuals and combat animations flow I hope. This is similarly to EX+ version of Tokyo Xanadu, or Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana when ported to modern console where a lot of contents are added. The bad thing is, it is entirely "new" game, totally incompatible with this version for no valid reasons, even though both using the exact same Falcom in-house engine but there is no saves, not even a single DLC or bonus DLC being backward compatible, you can't upgrade directly from here to Proud...

The weakest modern entry in the series. The setting had the potential to be another Ys VIII–level adventure, but Falcom ended up mixing Ys’s solid gameplay with Kiseki’s bloated story and endless dialogue. In the end, the worst parts of Kiseki completely drowned out the best parts of Ys.

I love YS, I love Falcom, but how they handled the Proud Nordics DLC was just plain scummy. I am not buying this again lol

Ys X is a solid game but I would not buy this version; I along with so many other people in the reviews are iffed about Falcom pulling a P5R for Proud Nordics. Get that when it comes out if you're itching to play Ys X (or buy this one, your money) but at the moment I can't recommend this version because of the silly decision behind the creation of a new, separate version of the game with, as of writing, no way for owners of this version to upgrade to the shiny new one. Good game, but just wait for Proud Nordics.

Don't bother with this one. Ys VIII was 5 or 6 times better. Section 1: mechanics or design spoilers (not story spoilers)
The music didn't grab me. Driving around in the ocean onto a buncha dinky islands to fight enemies that felt or looked the same got old quickly. The story felt very basic or surface-level. It's just "let's fight the Greigr" for the whole game. All the mana ride, mana string, etc. abilities were not fun and felt like someone had played too much tony hawk or spiderman lately. Get your platforming out of my RPG. The boat starts out so slow it's painful to just sail out slowly slowly going anywhere. Having only 2 characters in the party the whole time was a big minus. It lacked the dynamics and character depth that comes from interactions in a larger party. Battle was silly because aside from the achievement for mastering single-person skills, there was no reason to not be in Duo mode the whole time. Duo mode is so strong, plus the game is constantly ma...

Half-baked and uninspired entry. Most certainly not crafted by the talent that did the previous entries. If this is the quality Falcom are settling on then i won't be interesting in upcoming releases.
