Pales in comparison to the Case of the Golden Idol sadly. Cases are prettier and more intricate but also much more mundane - there's a griminess from the first game that I feel this one has lost. Though Kyle Misko was involved in the music giving us such great tracks as "Wine and Cards", "Slight Delay" and many others from the first game almost all tracks in this are forgettable. I respect the devs for trying new things like the spiel dance case but the whole game fell flat for me.

Use your detective skills to make sense of a grand mystery that unfolds across an age of hallucinogens, disco, fax machines and parapsychology.
200 YEARS LATER… THE IDOL RISES
Two hundred years after the unspeakable fate of the Cloudsley family, the Idol's legend lives on only in whispers and myth… but some are determined for this to change. Discover the mysterious forces connecting a tenacious treasure hunter, a team of scientists, the members of an enlightenment-seeking cult and corporate profiteers drawn to the all-powerful artifact.

User Reviews
just as fun as the predecessor, and varied enough to keep it from feeling too samey
This is just as good as the first game which makes it one of the best detective games I've ever played. It's on the level of Return of the Obra Dinn.
For the most part this is more of Case of the Golden Idol, which is great for fans of the first game. The sequel manages to stay fresh by moving away from the fairly bloated Case DLC level design in a couple of ways, one by having some overarching puzzles across levels and having a greater variety of puzzles that aren't just figuring out how a million items fit in static scenes. The story was also surprisingly good. It's nothing mindblowing and stays fairly simple like the first game, but there's a subtle sprinkling of sci-fi horror that leaves a bit more to think about after everything's done.
Best game ever! 10/10 I wish there were twenty of these.
Love these games. For me it's just chill mysteries to solve, and I vibe with the trippy music and art. Probably not for everyone but I really click with both this and Case of the Golden Idol. Always leaves me wanting more every time they drop new DLC content.
Rise of the Golden Idol is a worthy sequel, taking the world of the original and expanding on it. While I wish the janky low-fi aesthetic of the original was preserved better in this new chapter, it's a worthy continuation of one of the best detective experiences on the market.
The lack of novelty compared to the first game might be a bias, but I felt this one be a little inferior to the first game. But it's still an excellent game, and if you liked the first game, you'll like the second one for sure!
I think I prefer this one over the original.
Sadly enjoyed the original, but the UX design of the Rise of the Golden Idol is extremely poor. Very hard to read the text on a big screen and developers don't seem interested in fixing this unfortunately.
