So, I think the Dragon Quest franchise just isn't for me. So this may be a biased review. Like, the game is a good classic experience. And the graphical update, music, and quality of life changes are awesome. But it's such a non-existent story. And I know what you're thinking, it's a story from 1988, it's not fair to compare it to today. But honestly, DQ is just kind of known for this. Even up to 8, the writing is just not what you'd want from an RPG, a genre that's defining feature is it's story. And 3 is no different from the rest of the franchise when it comes to eye-rolling tedium. Like to get a boat, you have to get black pepper for the kind, but the seller is on the other side of the planet. And even when you get there, he's disposed because his fiance is kidnapped. After saving her, he's thankful, but oh no, he's out of black pepper. So he gives you an IOU to take to his supplier so that you can track him down, get black pepper, and go get your ship (funny too, becau...

I was full of optimism and for the first few hours, that optimism was confirmed, rewarded, It IS beautiful to look at, the music IS wonderful to listen to, the aesthetics ARE utterly charming, and the gameplay IS fun; BUT levelling was long, difficult and frustrating (i.e. very grindy) and I never felt heroic or sometimes even capable. Good gear was so expensive it was unobtainable for most of the game; the job/profession system isn't explained ; the story didn't flow well; and advancing necessitated referencing online guides (thank you to Neoseeker for their excellent walkthrough). Combat added to the frustration: enemies with double attacks, bosses with triple attacks, an emphasis on negative status effects (which never work anywhere near as well or as often when you try to use them), insta-death spells and attacks (which, in my opinion, should be outlawed), one enemy group able to buff and heal other enemy groups, and no group healing for me until far to far into the game. In short ...

Well, it's official, 20 hours in and I can say that the Dragon Quest III Remake is a nostalgic love letter to the NES classic. It's got that lush pixel art that meshes really nicely with new dynamic lighting, that coupled with the late great Akira Toriyama's art style makes this game truly beautiful. If you prefer a dynamic game with a very complex combat system, this isn't that. The gameplay here has that simple turn-based combat, cast spells, defeat monsters, explore a new town, repeat. Equipment boosts fairly standard statistics with not too much complexity. I have to mention Akira Toriyama's art again. The monsters are simple drawings but it works perfectly and their names are almost all puns like "Rottenweiler". It's easy to throw the game on for a quick 30-minute session, defeat a few monsters, explore a new area, then save at the church until next time. I haven't played a Dragon Quest since VIII for the PS2, but I have fond memories of "Dragon Warrior" on NES so it's nic...

Finished Dragon Quest 3 Remake, Censorship issues aside with the character A and B instead of saying Male or Female is pretty ridiculous, Really Enjoyed the HD 2D style and made the world feel a lot more immersive compared to playing the OG, The Art Design is very faithful to Toriyama Art and the pixels are well animated and a lot of the Monster Designs translated really well, The World is very Colorful just like DQ Adventure of Dai anime and does a real good job of giving off the same vibes The Story is typical Hero’s Journey and is like that for the whole run, Really like the Scenes with your self insert Father and that’s the most emotion I derive from seeing him die and not knowing he met his son after fighting King Hydra, I have issue with Letting one of your party members set a town up and he gets jailed and the story really doesn’t explain much on that angle The Purpose of what the Stats mean from what I thought they meant could’ve used a Tutorial since knowing wh...

It doesn't really do that much better than the SNES version other than it looks prettier and has an arrow to where you are supposed to go.
