Red Dead Redemption on full price is overpriced, I understand there is a decent amount of what you can do but the second game does everything better and you pretty much can get it for a cheaper price when it is on sale.
Play it only if you're interested in seeing where John Marston's story is going, or in case you enjoyed the second game a great deal and want some more, but know this game is obviously lesser in quality compared to that one from every standpoint. Nevertheless, it's still a decent, enjoyable experience.
The Story and Its Progression:
In my opinion, unfortunately, it only gets good in the endgame. The rest of it falls a bit flat, in the sense that most of what you do to get to that point feels rather hollow, as if it doesn't even matter all that much because the characters you encounter that help you reach your goal are not memorable. Half of them are treated as a mere joke, to say the least, as a way of saying look at this...

One of the best games Rockstar has ever made. I originally played this on the ps3 so it's nice to see this game running on a higher framerate. This game is also much easier to replay compared to to RDR2. I love RDR2 as well but I prefer the first game overall as it feels more videogame-y while RDR2 is much more cinematic and overall slower paced if that makes sense.

RDR was my Half-Life 2, my MGS3, my Ocarina of Time. I would've spent hundreds of hours playing this game in my youth. I did not realise how much of this game was cemented in my core memory. The entire game is haunting, mature, poignant, timeless. Easily the greatest influence on the choice of games in adulthood. Cannot express the affection i have for this piece of art. *Over 10 years later and still knowing the ending, it's a gut punch to play again.

Oh boy, Red Dead Redemption. Riding a horse through prairies and mountains gives a real sense of freedom, and story missions, treasure hunting, or random events can keep you playing for many hours. The optimization is not always good. There are frame drops, stutters, and small graphic bugs that can break the immersion. Even on stronger PCs you can feel that this is an old port, and the high price does not really match the technical quality. Undead Nightmare expansion is also worth mentioning and shows Red Dead Redemption in a very different way. Mixing western atmosphere with a zombie invasion is unusual, but it works great. The horror feeling fits well with the open world, and the new missions and tasks are just as fun as the main campaign. It’s a strong addition that gives many hours of gameplay and shows how creative the Wild West story can be. Red Dead Redemption proves that a good story and atmosphere are timeless. The port could be better, but for me ...

Only rating it this because a PORT of a 15 year old game being any more than 30 bucks is pretty fucking stupid

It's about damn time I wrote my review for this masterpiece of a game. 💯 As a huge fan of the Red Dead Redemption franchise, I loved every second spent into this game. I had never played this game before because it was exclusive to consoles so I started my journey into the franchise by spending over 500 hours in Red Dead Redemption 2. Switching to this game didn't feel at all like a downgrade. In terms of quality (story, missions, dialogues, soundtrack, activities to do), I can easily put this in the same category as RDR2 and in terms of graphics, it's not quite on the same level, but still extraordinarily good for a game released in 2010. I loved the way the story is seamlessly connected with the events of RDR2 and we get to know John Marston better and realise what a legend and a badass gunslinger he becomes throughout the story. Almost single handedly he clears out all the bandits in New Austin, helps winning a revolution in Mexico, takes down some of the legendary gunsling...

Plays similar to how I remember, Duels and aiming is (unsurprisingly) easier with a mouse. The writing and voice acting are still good with camp mixed with serious moments. The textures haven't changed from the original release. This game is a port of an old game from console, not worth the full asking price but worth it if heavily discounted and you are a returning fan or a fan of the sequel. Other than those conditions, I cannot and will not recommend this at more than a tenner. Also don't fool for the subscription, this should be a game you spend some time with, not something you try to complete in a few weekends.

Sold most of my steam inventory off, got this during the last discount, a good follow up to RDR2. The only sad thing is they really didn't change much, dueling is still not very fun, even a slight update to the textures would have gone a long way. Runs great on the steam deck and is still one of the best games out there, glad it finally came out on PC.

TL;DR, this is a good console game, but this PC/steam port is not worth paying for at it's current place. So if you're trying to find which Red Dead game to buy on PC, pick RDR2. Coming from a guy who played RDR2 first (and loved it), I really want to like this game, but I don't think it's worth the $50. Of course the story is great and the graphics aren't half bad for a game released in 2010, but the controls on PC don't really work well and some of the interactions just feel janky. If this was a remastered version of RDR1, rather than a port, then I think it would be worth buying. If you haven't played either Red Dead game and are looking into getting this first, I would say pay the extra $10 (or wait until it's on sale, because it's pretty common) and get RDR2, since you don't *need* to play the first game to understand the story of the second. With RDR2 having a campaign that takes you up to 60 hours to complete (a stark contrast to RDR1's 20 hour campaign), a much larger map to ...
