About This Game
Note: There are no monsters chasing you or jumping suddenly towards you, but the game can feel oppressive. POOLS plays on fears of getting lost, the dark, and tight spaces.

The game has no user-interface and no dialogue. No background music. Instead, the game uses sounds to make you feel like you're really there. The sounds and echo change depending on the room you're in. Walking in water is slower. All of these things makes the game feel more real and creates a tense atmosphere.
There's no typical story, no characters to meet, and you won't find any notes in game. But as you explore and advance further, you start to notice that the game's world changes around you. Rooms look and feel different. Each chapter has something unique. Constantly you're exploring new places, each with its own kind of mystery.
POOLS has six unique chapters, each taking 10 to 30 minutes to play.

POOLS is inspired by a internet phenomenons "Liminal spaces", "Found footage" and "Backrooms" - specifically "Backrooms Pools" or "Poolrooms".
One of the original artists behind the Poolrooms concept is Jared Pike.
Other inspirations include:
- Matt Studios: Poolrooms videos from 2022
- Mortain Colors
- Anemoiapolis: Chapter 1 by Andrew Quist
- Kane Pixels: The Backrooms (Found Footage)

My wife used to have anxiety issues. Throughout the years I managed to calm her down by convincing her that all our negative emotions, sadness, anger, depression, fear, etc. comes from the way we think about the things that we experience. That's why for example we can learn to laugh at past events that previously we experienced as humiliating. Fear is one of the strongest emotions we can feel, and it comes from our mind trying to create scenarios to be prepared for everything, which is simply not possible, but these made up thoughts weaken us and cause harm to us, despite these theoretical events might and most probably will not happen at all. But it's coded into us. It's an instinct. So we have to rewire our brain to overcome these non-existent obstacles that we ourselves put into our own ways. This game is living proof of this. I knew from the start that there is no monster, there are no other NPCs, there's nothing that could cause us any harm, and there will not be any jumpscares o...
"POOLS" is the type of backrooms game that you should play if you are tired of all the "entities" or whatever and want the true liminal spaces experience. I highly recommend it if it is on sale or if you are really into horror/atmospheric games.
Bought because it promised no monster/chasers. I just wanted to walk around a liminal pool leisurely. I went from "maybe i can visit this place in my lucid dream" to "oh no i'm going to have a nightmare about this aren't i..." when i first started chapter 1. Quite amazed how empty harmless spaces can feel highly uncomfortable, with the dark corners and such (your "jump(?)scare" would be rubber ducks/floaty more than anything). And the newly added Chapter 0?? Highly explorative, love it so much, thanks devs
For a game under $10, I think it's interesting. But walking around not really sure why, looking for what, I'm not sure. Going in and out of pools for no real clear reason at all other then to move to the next challenge. Feels like it needs a better tie in. Different. Can't say it's a horrible idea for the cost. But Not enough to keep me.
This game is staggeringly similar to every fever dream i had as a child. It evoked such real anxiety whilst playing. I couldn't put it down! Absolutely stunning visual and ambient effects.
i got jump-scared by a toilet
