About the Game

About DATE A LIVE

DATE A LIVE is a popular light novel series from Fujimi Fantasia Bunko. It has been adapted into a TV anime series of the same name, the fifth and most recent installment of which—DATE A LIVE V—was broadcast in April 2024.

This next-generation boy-meets-girl story, written by Koushi Tachibana and illustrated by Tsunako, has garnered immense popularity both in Japan and overseas, selling over six million copies worldwide!

The story of DATE A LIVE begins thirty years after Earth has been plagued by spacequakes. These calamities are triggered by the emergence of enigmatic entities known as Spirits. One day, an ordinary student named Shido Itsuka encounters a Spirit disillusioned with humanity. Shido’s sister, Kotori, reveals to him that he possesses the unique ability to seal Spirit’s powers away.

However, the method is surprising. To seal a Spirit’s powers, he has to date her and make her fall for him!

Shido resolves to do whatever it takes to protect the world and save them. He faces the Spirits with total sincerity as he navigates the various challenges that come his way.

Story

A newly emergent spirit named Natsumi ends up in the crosshairs of Deus Ex Machina Industry. Shido defends Natsumi from Deus Ex Machina Industry and manages to seal her powers.

Following the transformation and inversion caused by Origami, Shido manages to reshape the world to protect it, eventually sealing Origami.

Enemies may still lurk about, but Shido and his friends savor the peace they’ve secured through their ordeals.

After an ordinary evening spent among friends, Shido has an unusual dream. He hears a mysterious voice calling out from the shadows.

Upon waking up the next morning, Shido discovers a peculiar container adorned with a snake pattern under his pillow.

Thinking it might be a prank, Shido asks around for the container’s owner. But when they try to open it…

Amazing story and interesting cover character, her backstory and motivation. It's kinda tricky to get the "extra" ending (how the true ending is called here), but it is totally worth it. Of course, similarly to earlier entries, it is a bittersweet one, but like other DaL games, it is of high quality. It was good to meet all the Spirits from up to 3rd season of anime (or 12th light novel) and even more in true ending (something nice for earlier DaL game fans). Pity that all routes are a bit short (one or two days more added to 3 would be sufficent), but it is better to have "shorter" game of higher quality than dozens of hours long slog. Fans of the series will of course enjoy it, but everybody who likes a lighthearted and wholesome VN should find it a worthwille experience. Overall a masterpiece, I wonder if there will be another one with Mukuro and Nia included, but even if Ren Dystopia is the last entry in DaL video games it is a fitting sendoff.

This is the hardest thumbs-down I've ever had to write. As a massive fan of Date A Live, and an avid enjoyer of the three other visual novels, I had high hopes, that were ultimately dashed. The game isn't bad, it's... fine. But it's not on the same caliber of the others at all. The music is completely reused, the writing wasn't very compelling, and the story is heavily contrived, to an annoyingly rash degree, and not only has one of the cheapest endings I've ever seen, but ultimately lacks a lot of necessary explanation to feel any sense of meaning and closure
, especially as to how and why Rinne, Rio, the Arusus, and Mayuri all suddenly show up again, and what the purgatory they exist in is at the end of it all. Seeing them again was great, don't get me wrong, but we have no idea why
. I think the game is OK, but NOT at its current price point at all. This is not worth $40 whatsoever. I would only cop this on a big sale ($15 or less?), and that's if you're a big fan o...
