About This Game

Experience the tale of a cheerful girl and a grouchy talking hat in this charming Metroidvania, where every ability is hat-based! Throw the hat to attack enemies, teleport to him to make perilous leaps, and fly him through narrow tunnels of spikes as you escape a dangerous magic forest.

Playing with a keyboard and mouse is recommended for the best experience, as it supports 360° aiming, allowing you to throw the hat wherever you wish!

Handcrafted Platforming Challenges

Brave rooms that have all been thoughtfully designed to be challenging and interesting—including both tricky platforming and heart-pumping enemy encounters. They will test your familiarity and mastery of your abilities, so leap, throw, and teleport to victory!

Hidden Abilities and Devious Secrets

In addition to the usual Metroidvania secrets behind breakable walls, Whirlwind Magician features outside-the-box ways to use your abilities as well as secret ones that will open up shortcuts and change how you approach the game, inspired by popular speedrunning titles like Super Metroid.

Cute, Bickering Protagonists

Play as Viola—a cheerful and brave young girl who wants to become a magician, and Gibson—a grouchy and cautious talking hat who is reluctantly helping Viola find her way home. Watch their friendship grow as they bicker, argue, and learn to get along with their contrasting personalities.

It's a cute, bite-sized Metroidvania. The core mechanic is unique and satisfying to use - it's a tiny bit clunky because of how many buttons you have to press (especially given how often you'll be doing it), but otherwise no notes - it's pretty fun to use and makes navigating the map feel good. The spritework is basic, but the main character is expressive and it's easy to read, so it does what it has to. It took about 1.5 hours to beat, plus another 30-40 minutes to 100%, but given the price and how solid the traversal is, I'd definitely recommend to any Metroidvania fans!

A very endearing little metroidvania with a neat central mechanic, fun from start to finish, would absolutely recommend it. Platforming feels nice and snappy, there's some tricky stuff in the endgame but it's engaging and well designed. It's quite short but great fun and well worth the price, great for a rainy afternoon.

Wonderfully wholesome mini metroidvania! Whirlwind Magician isn't a very long experience but it more than makes up for its lack of content with charm and polish, at least as far as actual game goes, but more on that later. There are only 4 biomes, three of which are various shades of forest, but each area manages to look and feel quite distinct through its simple but quite appealing pixel art. This extends to character animations as well, most of which are adorable and expressive. I especially love all of Gibson's silly reactions, and how Viola's in-game facial expression subtly changes based on what's going on in the story. The music is as understated as the art. It's not exactly memorable, but very fitting for a quirky forest adventure. With such pleasant presentation, one can't be faulted to think WM would be a very easy game... One would be very wrong. Gibson's throwing, teleportation and slingshot mechanics require lots of inputs, and are quite tricky to pull off, especially wit...

No matter how short and budget this game is, there is a lot of indivuality and charm especially in how characters are drawn and animated. I liked the unique "throw and teleport" mechanic and it has a lot of potenial. The music may be bland but there was one track I particularly enjoyed. Overall a good game for it's price, hope to see more from this developer in the future.

I'm very impressed! As a proof of concept, Whirlwind Magician is completely successful. The central mechanic of throwing the hat is fun, versatile, and finely tuned for such a simple game. The art and animations are delightful, and better yet, they showcase the promising talent of the solo developer. The relationship between the two leads develops perfectly over a short time, demonstrating Santi Ponce's grasp on the fundamentals of storytelling. As much as I enjoyed this game, I am even more excited to see what comes next. I recommend it to all indie lovers, and I congratulate its talented developer!

A cute bite-sized metroidvania with a clear core mechanic. It can be beaten in 1-2 hours, so I recommend playing it. I want to highlight the character animations, very charming.

This game was fine. I don't regret buying it, or the 2 hours I put into it. The teleportation mechanic was the highlight for me.
