I played the main story when it came out 10 years ago (time flies!), but I was always interested in the dlc campaigns. Now I've completed them all and there's an interesting game design meta arc going on here: each dlc explores how you can riff on the concept of the first game... and each campaign gets a bit wilder. Plague of Shadows is the safest of the 3: you're basically playing through SoH again, but with Plague Knight who has a radically different playstyle compared to Shovel Knight. It took me a while to get used to his weird movement, but it makes the old levels feel new again. There's a cute little love story going on here too. Specter of Torment however is probably my favorite campaign of the bunch. The playstyle is revamped again, with Specter Knight who has a very Ninja Gaiden-esque moveset, zipping and slicing through the levels. The level design is now remixed too and has you playing through similar levels from the main campaign, but completely revamped. The cherry on ...

very fun 2D sidescrolling platformer, plenty of content
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is a masterclass in retro-inspired game design, blending pixel-perfect platforming, tight controls, and charming storytelling into one of the most complete and lovingly crafted 2D action experiences available on Steam. Developed by Yacht Club Games, Treasure Trove isn’t just a single game—it’s a full collection of campaigns, each starring a different character from the Shovel Knight universe, and each offering a fresh spin on gameplay, tone, and mechanics. It’s a rare case of a game that doesn’t just honor its inspirations—it elevates them. At the heart of the collection is the original Shovel of Hope, the game that started it all. Taking heavy inspiration from 8-bit classics like Mega Man, DuckTales, and Castlevania, this campaign follows the noble Shovel Knight on his quest to rescue Shield Knight and defeat the nefarious Order of No Quarter. The gameplay is a textbook example of elegant simplicity—running, jumping, and shoveling your way ...
After achieving 100% completion in Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, I can confidently say this is a fantastic game. If you're a fan of platformers, this modern classic is a must-play. Each character brings their own unique playstyle, and the game does an excellent job of challenging your skills through the diverse abilities and items you collect along the way. What really stands out is the replayability, it never feels stale. Having played each character multiple times through to get all the achievement, i went through 180 hours of this game without getting bored. With multiple characters, distinct campaigns, and varied game modes, Treasure Trove offers a ton of value for its price and then some.
good lil game
*Going through my library to recommend games I played outside of Steam* Incredibly tight controls with loads of content. One of the best retro revival platformers out there that's only gotten better since I originally played on Wii U.
While I completely understand why this title is so beloved by so many indie fans, I did not enjoy it as much as others. It is still fantastic, but its not the perfect game everyone seems to make it out to be. However, don't let this stop you from trying it, I still think its one of the must-plays of gaming.
ye
This is an inspired set of games. All four are wonderfully packaged adventures that have simple stories and game mechanics that get more interesting and challenging as they progress. To start, the pixel art and specifically the character designs are unique and pleasing to the eye. Level designs are filled with beautiful and vibrant visuals, that you'll need to stop to really take it in. The music is something else, it pairs perfectly with bit visuals and doesn't really get old even after dying a lot of times. Shovel of Hope is a fantastic start with a with difficult melee combat. Plague of Shadows introduces a really fun twist on the gameplay, allowing you to throw potions and with different combinations of blasts and fuses allowing you to get creative and have the potion for any situation. This one also my favorite ending (tide with the first one ofc). Specter of Torment gives amazing backstory on key characters from the first one and introduces rail-grinding and wall running...
Let me say this. If you just want to play the main campaigns, and maybe a bit of the extra content, I would recommend. The Shovel Knight, Plague Knight, Spectre Knight and King Knight campaigns are all very well made and engaging, plus Showdown is... alright. However, if you are a completionist, who wants to get 100% achievements on every game they play... SAVE YOURSELF. This game's achievements are hellish and will steal your time. I've played for 225 hours and I still have 18 achievements left. Casual gamers? Buy. Completionists? NONONONONO
