About This Game

Underrail is an old school turn-based isometric indie role playing game that focuses on exploration and combat.

The game is set in a distant future, when the life on the Earth’s surface has long since been made impossible and the remnants of humanity now dwell in the Underrail, a vast system of metro station-states that, it seems, are the last bastions of a fading race.

The player takes control of one of the denizens of such a station-state whose life is about to become all that much more interesting and dangerous, as our protagonist is caught midst the conflicting factions of the Underrail as the violently struggle to survive in the harsh underground environment.

Despite its looks this is not a Fallout 1 style game where almost all builds work and you will be able to finish it regardless of your play style. This is an overly hard, save-scum wiki style game where even the wiki will not solve your problems, you will reading build guides and be Googling for Reddit answers to how to get past each quest and obstacle and find all the stuff you need and finish quests the "right way" so you don't get locked out of stuff. Dev made it mod-unfriendly to stop players from playing it the way they like and forcing them to confront unfair level design and retry encounters many times before being able to complete them using knowledge they should not have. Made it to level 24 before I gave up in frustration with the level design, and from everything I read, it gets even worse with Expedition and Deep Caverns. Most of my "hours" in this game were spent in windowed mode surfing the web while waiting the 30 minutes of real time for each merchant random restock...

TLDR; A pedantic game which loves to delve into minute details like the exact make of bullets used by each guns down to the last mm, Underbarter is a post-apacalyptic shopping simulator disguising itself as an RPG. Jokes aside, the shopping broke me. Merchants have very limited money to purchase your loot, and they will only purchase a limited number of randomised items each cycle (as in you don't know what they're going to buy until you reach the merchant), and very limited supply of crafting materials. I couldn't bring myself to continue the game when I ran out of special ammo as the thought of making multiple shopping trips to restock on crafting materials and sell all the loot I've gathered to make super steel was overwhelming.

A great CRPG that will make Fallout 2 and post-apocalyptic fans feel pretty good. It's not perfect by any means (cons are descriptive for that reason), but it still keeps you going to see your progression and the interesting story develop. Here are the pros and cons, considering that I played it in classic XP mode and normal difficulty. Pros - Great writing - Interesting story - Good build variety (for the most part) - Very atmospheric - Great soundtrack Cons - All quests have a small sentence describing them, sometimes extremely vague. If you get multiple quests at the same time and have little time to play the game (because you have a life) you will get frustrated. Some NPCs can give you additional info, but the quest description stays the same; there are no updates. You might even miss the single clue to solve a quest because you talked to the right random person at the wrong time. - Some quests need pen and paper for you to figure out the solution, which can be fine, but not to ...

Don't like that Psi doesn't regenerate infinitely. If you don't mind that, you might like it, it's very obviously inspired by Fallout 1 & 2.

I'll be honest, I LOVE this game. It itches that strategy and build based combat that I love in RPGs, and I love the story, BUT The ending sucks so bad. The game gives you so much freedom in choices of what to do in the game, letting you do sadistic things because its funny, or being the vanilla good guy. But when it comes to the final fights and factions? Nope. You can either kill the bad guys, or kill the bad guys and the neutral party. No siding with the "bad guys". A time robot tells you, "it is your destiny to do this. It's not important why just do it." And that's it. The ending sequence railroads you into one decision on the most interesting character in the game.

Underrail is a compelling isometric role-playing game that immerses players in a post-apocalyptic underground world teeming with danger, mystery, and complex decision-making. Developed by Stygian Software, it captures the essence of classic CRPGs with its deep, tactical gameplay, intricate lore, and a richly detailed setting that feels both nostalgic and fresh. The game is set in a vast, expansive subterranean environment known as the Underrail, a vast network of tunnels, abandoned stations, and dangerous wastelands that have become humanity’s last refuge after surface life became uninhabitable. From the moment players step into this gloomy, oppressive world, they are greeted with a haunting atmosphere, complemented by a gritty pixel art style that exudes both nostalgia and a unique visual charm, with detailed environments and character sprites that vividly bring the underground world to life. The core gameplay of Underrail revolves around tactical combat, exploration, and character...

The people bashing the game for the dev being a "fascist" will turn around and praise Disco Elysium (another great RPG btw) despite that game's developers also having strong views. If being a political schizo makes you create good RPGs then what do I care?

This game has a great potential, but: 1. Cancerous trading system. Crafting is mostly useless. 2. Bad dialogue UI and underdeveloped characters, writing, etc. (some dialogues are decent, but it's mostly garbo anything considering writing) 3. Unfair battle modificators like stun and emp which make you use cheese strategies to progress, which is present through most of the game 4. Factions have no real personality, only empty colorfull shells. Yt's grey morals, but not in a Fallout way. Protectorate was the best one logically, but then they introduce the "bad guys" that you can't even do anything about, which leaves the main story quests unsatisfying in any way. You could've thought of any way of dealing with it, but the game simply doesn't give you such an option, which kinda ruined the game for me. The fighting system, even with the cons, is pretty interesting to figure out, so it's kinda fun. Grenades and sniper rifles are OP btw. But it's too hard and demanding to create something...

Incredible depth and writing, combat, RPG character stats/abilities/specialization options, tons of ways to play, can easily spend 100s of hours in this game IMO. As far as the two DLCs go, I'd give Expedition a 9.5/10 and Heavy Duty far less high of a score, not due to being bad or not worth the money, but it's simply far, FAR less content and interesting things and new areas and quests to explore than Expedition adds. Overall, it has been a joy to play Underrail.
