About This Game
Progress Chess is a whole chess world on your computer, with its own clubs, tournaments, chess players and awards, where you can study chess and improve your skills, along the way making a virtual career as a chess player from a complete beginner to a master, and maybe even to the World Champion. In this game, chess players of absolutely any level will find suitable opponents.
Here you can compete with more than 80 virtual human chess players of different levels and playing styles: from a beginner who has just learned the rules to an international grandmaster with an ELO rating of over 2700. You can play training games, random games for rating, or you can take part in full-fledged tournaments held according to the round robin, Swiss, or Olympic systems and win virtual awards. Games take place in realistic virtual locations, such as a restaurant, a children's room, a school, or a chess club.
As your skill grows, you will be assigned ranks and an ELO rating. If you are just starting to learn chess, you have several training modes available: a basic course for beginners, where you will master the rules of the game and the basics of chess theory, as well as an advanced course for solving combination problems and studies.
You will find computer models of all past and current world champions plus a huge collection of their games available for study and computer analysis. You can play a game with a virtual model of the champion in the corresponding historical location, for example in the Column Hall of the House of Unions in Moscow!
Key features:
More than 80 voiced virtual chess players from beginners to grandmasters, each with their own character and playing style.
Extensive training mode capabilities: setting a given position and arbitrary time control: blitz, fast chess, classic, etc.
Play in chess tournaments and cups, move from the beginners club to the amateur and then professional league.
Win virtual prizes and place them in your room.
Detailed analysis of your games with AI comments and showing mistakes made! All your saved and tournament games are available in pgn format.
Take training courses at the chess school and receive virtual diplomas.
More than 40 unique realistic 3D locations where games are held. Play in the historic Column Hall of the House of Unions and feel the atmosphere of epochal matches at the world championships.
Over 20 different sets of 3D chess boards and pieces, from classic Staunton to bizarre ancient Chinese ones.
Three in one: you can develop your chess career in any of three possible modes: classical chess, Fischer chess and transform-chess.
The project is constantly evolving: players can expect free updates, including new chess sets, locations, virtual chess players and much more!

User Reviews
I can give this a somewhat conflicted recommendation, with a few big caveats: First, polish and professionalism is in low supply here. Progress Chess uses a lot of gratis assets from around the internet, and they often seem a bit slapdash in their application (pieces that seem way too big or too small for the boards and (wonky) camera location, a lot of pitch-modified voices for supposed 8-year-olds who curse like sailors, and a lot of really poor English localization). Most of the chess sets are pretty ugly and/or illegible (and thus impractical for play) as rendered here. You have "over 20" sets but I never play with more than perhaps five or six of them. There also seem to be limitations (or bugs) regarding when you can change the set; I can change it on one game, and then play another game in the same tournament where the set is locked for no apparent reason. The audio quips made by the bots are cute at first, but they get repetitive and it's not always obvious how they correlate ...
