I enjoyed the game as a kid and it's a good flash back to old times. Even now it feels good to play, the mechanics of the game are simple and being able to fish for good loot to either use or sell early on is probably one of the best way to make a massively powerful character. I'd say it's pretty balanced in terms of leveling and fighting, though i got to the retiring floor at level 17 and the floor monster level was over 40 and still won, its very fun but also very time consuming.
This is a mixed review, but I'm giving it a thumbs up cause my opinion leans more towards positive FATE definitely is a cult classic. It brings us to an era of simple games, with zero explanation of how things work and unbalanced gameplay (this one actually has some variety) You will find a lot of random systems here: dungeons are randomly generated, the main boss will be in a random dungeon floor, shops offer you random items every time you reload/go back to town, fishing is absolutely random even if you time it correctly It starts fine, but as you keep going through the dungeon, repetitiveness kicks in - there are 3 or 4 different dungeon tiles only, so you will be going through a loop of the same maps. Enemy variety exists up until a certain point, but most of them just hit you with basic attacks and cast a spell once in a while Buffs and debuffs are very strong, which is always a positive point in my book (it feels miserable to invest into debuffing enemies and finding out that...
I rediscovered this game after many years not playing -- and it is just as fun this time around! You have to strategize a bit to best equip yourself and learn all the tricks as you progress. It is not gory and is fun building yourself, your pet, and your minions up.
