I thought I'd pick up this game six months after release because the technical issues must be solved by now, mustn't they? Wrong! Constant stuttering and low frame rate on a high end system. Frequent freezing. But wait, Obsidian has the solution: "If your system meets the game’s minimum requirements, we recommend updating your graphics card drivers to the latest version. If you’re still experiencing issues that may be graphics-related, try updating your drivers again, this time using the “clean install” option (if available, depending on the manufacturer). This ensures old driver files are removed, preventing potential conflicts. Finally, restart your PC after installing new drivers before starting the game again." The only problem with that solution is it doesn't work. My solution: don't buy this game.

About the Game
Welcome to the Living Lands, a mysterious island filled with adventure and danger.
Set in the fictional world of Eora that was first introduced to players in the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Avowed is a first-person fantasy action RPG from the award-winning team at Obsidian Entertainment.
The Living Lands is an island where the air hums with ancient magic, the flora seems to move with a mind of its own, and the ground beneath your feet shifts with secrets waiting to be unearthed.
Now, the Living Lands faces a dire threat—a mysterious plague that defies nature and reason, spreading chaos across its sprawling wilderness.
As an envoy of Aedyr, you are sent to investigate, but what begins as a mission of duty soon becomes deeply personal—you feel as though the land recognizes you and is pulling you toward something greater. The choices you make will ripple across the Living Lands, shaping the fates of its people, its creatures, and even yourself. But beware, for every decision carries weight, and the forces you encounter will not hesitate to test your resolve.
Can you navigate the tangled web of intrigue, power, and danger to uncover the truth? Can you save this unknown frontier and your soul from the forces threatening to tear them asunder?
The Living Lands is a place that feels foreign yet somewhat intrinsic to you as it feels the island itself is calling out to you for help. Explore an island home to many different environments and landscapes, each with their own unique ecosystem.
Mix and match swords, spells, guns, and shields to fight your way. Dig into your grimoire for spells to trap, freeze or burn enemies, bash them with your shield, or use range bows to attack from a distance.
Companions from a spread of species will fight alongside you, with their own unique set of abilities. From a former mercenary to an eccentric wizard, they will be part of your journey with your choices shaping them as you help them with their quests.

Unless this is your first ever RPG, you will be disappointed at this game's lack of depth from every single perspective. It does earn points for it's graphics and aesthetics though - very beautifully put together and a good UI. Simply a boring game.
It's just the same game play loop in each zone. The characters are uninspiring. The dialogue is just garbage. They got the voice actor for Garrus from Mass Effect. Great. I'm sure he's a nice guy and I loved him as Garrus. I'll admit, his character is about the only one I was vaguely interested in solely based on that fact. The combat is fun, but that's about it. The forced RPG elements are lame. Like, I get it; it has a place among the fan base somewhere. Someone enjoys this, I'm sure. I don't. You have to be in the right state of mind to just accept the fact that you are playing the role of this god-like emissary character. It's all very forced. You don't get to create your own role, apart from the way you experience combat, and perhaps the way you traverse some dialogue options. If you were even considering: don't do it. I don't even recommend it on sale. I quit in the third act. I really took my time deciding before reviewing it. I wanted to see if I got an inkling of interest ...
I was VERY cautious about Avowed after all its trailers and didn't expect anything good tbh. And still it became my game of 2025. It's a gorgeous game if you don't expect it to be like AAA rpgs. It's not that big or varied, it doesn't have hundreds builds and classes, NPC schedules like Skyrim or Witcher and 100+ hours of playtime. But really it doesn't need it. It knows what it is and plays its role beautifully. The story is interesting and gives enough hints for player to figure out what's going on and doesn't resort to cheap shock reveals. It continues Pillars of Eternity story in a new but still spiritually similar way. Companions are wonderful, varied and kind without being generic or boring. The time I spent in camp listening to their banter is comparable to active play time. Landscapes are absolutely wonderful and so fun to explore, even the usually boring desert ones. Exploration here is one of the best I can ever remember. Quests are involved and interesting, and most NPCs ar...
One of the most bland, boring, over-laminated RPG's I've played. Played it thoroughly and did not enjoy a whole lot of it. Story wasn't compelling, there's little to no character building, and finding new companions feels super scripted and uneventful. I wanted to skip through dialogue constantly. Nothing pulled me in about the story which was apparently the most important part...
This game got some bad reviews initially but they've added quite a bit in the latest patches for talent builds and stuff to help offset the initial complaints. Don't think of this game as too much of a sandbox RPG like skyrim or witcher; I think that was the initial reviewers biggest mistakes, Avowed is decently linear and has a good number of side quests, but it isn't a massive open world to explore. In fact most of the exploration is done on foot or by fast travel. That said the world is rife with exploration potential and you will see a lot of lore revealed as you play, it's like a compact open world, which imo isn't a bad thing because a lot of sandboxes feel "empty." Like I loved witcher and the scale was accurate but did I really need to "ride the road for 15 minutes straight to get to a new town or should that town just be 5 minutes away because there isn't much between here and there?" Avowed paces well without dragging itself out as filler. The combat is extremely satisf...
Truly disappointing, you just end up doing the same thing over and over again against the same enemies. If you loved deadfire and were excited because of that then you will be sorely disappointed, this is nothing like that, not even close. Regardless of what you choose in this game, you'll end up on essentially the same path, there's an element of exploration but nothing worth finding and you never really feel any sense of achievement. The gear is few and far between, somehow you'll beat a 3rd act boss character and they drop a weapon that is multiple levels worse than the one you already have from days ago..... The characters look great and the voice acting is also very good but otherwise this just doesn't deliver at all. Deadfire was rich with choices and variety making it replayable multiple times, I doubt you'll get through this once without being bored to tears.
Lets get one thing clear, this is a very beautiful game. The visuals are built for next gen, and playing this on my Radeon 5 series was a dream. Bu in reality, this is Baby's First RPG. There is about 4 hours of real content, padded with repetitive, boring fights that play out the same every time, horrid companion AI (who do about 1% damage or the player, making them useless, and not one of them buffs your own damage), and exposition after exposition. There was no compelling gameplay or characters, and this was my experience. I was about 20 hours in on Path of the Damned and I hit a gamebreaking bug. The scripted enemy spawns failed with Rymgrim so I could no longer progress It happened again and again in a section where you are in a tiny room with hundreds of skeletons and other crap. The game was not balanced. enemies could throw a pebble (with deadly accuracy, uninterruptible action) and do 90% of my healthbar. Baut a barbarian with a great hammer did the same. There was no P...
Worst game I've ever played.... The game crashes everytime. At first you need to update your BIOS in order to play the game long enough to create a character but then you crash 10 minutes into the game. I've tried many things to correct this but unfortunetly... it keeps crashing. When I looked online, I noticed quite a large amount of players have the same issue. I played for 5.5hours and barely finished the tutorial because of how often it crashes. DON'T BUY THIS GAME!
A heaping pile of "meh." The only thing the game really has going for it is the incredible Pillars of Eternity lore. I'm not really sure who this game is for or why it exists. Pillars of Eternity 3 would've been much cheaper to make and probably would've sold a bit better. The art direction is especially bad; bland and generic as can be with weird color palettes and strange decisions to make the Godlike race look like they have a facial fungal disease (Godlike features looked pretty awesome in Pillars). The style is so far removed from Pillars that it's hard to believe they take place in the same universe. Combat is serviceable I suppose but incredibly generic action RPG / Souls-lite crap. It's not especially strategic or tactical in terms of understanding a ruleset, just push button fast. Then push button more. Not sure who asked for this. This release makes me incredibly nervous for The Outer Worlds 2. I didn't get far enough into the game to judge the quality of the writing, but...
