Summary: Sunderfolk is an innovative, elegant, and wonderfully delightful fusion of tabletop magic and digital convenience. A turn-based, tactical co‑op RPG for up to four players, it transforms your phone into a controller, character sheet, and guidebook. This exceptional game excels at creating an experience that feels like D&D-meets-Jackbox, with the strategy of Gloomhaven, but without the complexity or setup overhead. We LOVED it. So now my group will purchase every game like this that Secret Door develops. 🟢 Full Controller & Steam Deck Support: Controller can easily be used to navigate before game starts. For what happens during gameplay, see below. The game runs very well on Steam Deck, so carting this amazing game to a friend's place is even easier than bringing along any board game of similar design. 🟢 Innovative Phone-as-Controller Design: The game shines with its second-screen interface: using phones to manage personal information and decisions...

About the game type --> I found out about this game from a video talking about "free to share" games, games where only one person needs to buy the game and their friends can join in without buying a copy themselves. Our setup was that I streamed the game to them (to share the screen), and they controlled their side using the companion phone app that the game tells you to download (and then you have to scan your game session's QR code to join) The experience was somewhat similar to inviting friends to play a tabletop game with you, but online. It was great and I wanted to support that model by trying it out. It's really hard to convince friends to play a new game, and this made it way easier. About the game itself --> 1.- incredibly cheesy story makes it easy to skip if you don't want to stomach it (it comes with voice acting and all) 2.- all animal character cast, with great art 3.- the controls are pretty simple, the game is not a deep tactical wargame or anything like that,...

Missed the requirement to use a phone. Seems stupid to use my phone with a perfectly good mouse and keyboard right in front of me. And there isn't an option to do anything else

It's gloomhaven-lite that you can play with your friends who don't have the patience for gloomhaven or the friends you already beat gloomhaven with. The variable difficulty fits for any playgroup and the depth and balance is surprisingly good. The phone controls take a bit to get used to and could be annoying for some players.

Saved game night! Summary: It's really good, play the demo and then pay to carry on of it's for you. Game night was booked, a mate that moved away 6 months ago was flying back in, the Arkham Horror crew was being reassembled. The night before though, one of the guys called in with COVID. Disaster! But I remembered this game on my wishlist. I hooked my PC up to the TV, invested in a decent microphone, loaded the demo and shared my screen via Discord for the sick bloke to join in. With 3 of us on the couch, and 1 online, this played seamlessly. The app that all players need in order to play worked great, interactions were easy, you can use it to point and highlight things in the map for everyone to see, it just works so well. The game itself is good, there's a developing story to uncover as you go, the 3 card hand you play with feels tight, you'll want 1 more card all the time, so choosing your cards at the start of the scenario is not a no-brainer. Fortunately you get to see details of...

When it comes to strategic co-op gameplay for a reasonable price, it's really hard to do better than Sunderfolk. One of the big benefits is that only one player has to purchase the game, and that the other players only need a free smart phone app to play. This means not only are you not buying multiple copies of the game, there's no reason to buy that 3rd and 4th controller that you would never use again. Someone once described this game as "Gloomhaven but accessible" and i think that really holds true. You have plenty of push, pull, teleport, status effects, etc. but all are communicated in concise descriptions on each card that don't involve the hieroglyphic translations one must do every 10 seconds in Gloomhaven. There are so many opportunities for battle shifting turns once you learn your class, and there's a wide variety of mission types, enemy types, and objective types. I never felt myself getting bored across our playthrough. Each class plays quite differently, with new ski...

This has all the features of a good game, but the actual gameplay is just lacking. The customization of your character is pretty minimal. It's going to move along its growth path at exactly the rate of the game, and you're along for the ride. The art, voice, and story are all barely what's needed to connect the levels. Not everyone plays tactical rpgs for the story, though, so it's pretty forgivable. The big downfall is the battle/upgrade loop. The battles are fine, but the time in town between them is a complete waste. Town upgrades are level-gated so you're progressing at exactly the rate the game dictates. Making you click the extra buttons to make your donations is just tedium. Equipment upgrades are so remarkably simple and underpowered they may as well not exist. The lack of a quickmatch undermines the casual-party strength of letting people play with their phones. After a level or two we were all checking to see if there's a way to play with a controller, beca...

This is an amazing game! Great graphics, absolutely adorable characters, control with your phone saving the main screen for the broader perspective. It's basically gloomhaven, simplified, on the TV and with your phone for your personal setup. It's brilliant and great and I just want more of it! Expansions please!!
