About This Game

Every millennium the great demon king Azmodean opens a rift to the mortal realm to overtake it. The only way to save the world is by climbing the ranks of his Extreme Volleyball Infernal League! Are you game enough?

Authentic 8-bit graphics and sound!

Extreme Volleyball Infernal League was created for a true 8-bit era console, the SEGA Master System. The Steam version is a faithful port of the original, built to run natively on modern hardware and with Steam integration, but we also bundle the ROM for use with emulators and flash cartridges.

Rules

The demon imposes rules somewhat different from standard volleyball. In this league, players have 5 HP of life. When the ball touches the ground, the player on that side of the net looses life, so be careful not to miss the ball! Items are also spawned during the game to help conquer your opponent. After each round, you get bonus points for your remaining life (1000 per HP) and if your life gauge is still full, a perfect +10000 bonus.

Items

Fire: Throw a fireball to your opponent
Slow: Slows down the opponent for approx. 15 seconds
Shields: Summon a shield for help. (Insurance for one missed ball)
Cloud: Jump a lot higher and fall slower when jump button held.
Sprint shoes: Run faster!
Sticky: The ball sticks to you once! Walk up to the net and do an air jump to smash it!

Controls

Supports Game controllers, and Keyboard. Menus can be navigated using a mouse or touchscreen, but a keyboard or game controller is required to play.
The keyboard ESC key always opens the Pause menu in game and doubles as a Menu Back / Close menu key. For local multiplayer, the controller used to select a 2-player vs. mode match from the menu will assigned to player 1.

If playing with a keyboard in single player modes, or against a player with a game controller, keys are assigned as such:

Move player / menu cursor move: WASD / Arrow keys
Jump / Menu select: Z / F / SPACE / ENTER / PAGE-UP / Numpad 0
Use item / Menu back : X / G / SHIFT / PAGE-DOWN / Numpad 1

When no game controllers are connected, local 2-player matches are still possible. In such cases, 2-player keyboard mode will be automatically enabled when selecting a 2-player vs. mode match. Refer to the in-game 2-player mode information dialog for key mapping info.

I came across this game on accident when looking things up about RaphNet and their cables for old controllers. I felt compelled to buy to support RaphNet but worried this game wasn't going to add up to be much, but my buddy and I played it last night and were shocked by the amount of fun this game was. We knew it would be cute, we knew it would be nostalgic, we hoped it would be fun, but we were surprised that, on top of those things, it was clever and deeper than it appears on the surface. Themed arenas, items, and rogue-like mode? This game was absolutely a great time. Had to leave a review saying as much in the hopes that more people will give this a try (and then we can get more games from these guys in the future!).

Brilliant piece of nostalgic fun. This is what would happen if Mr Toriyama was to make a volleyball media franchise.

A unique take on the sports genre and a nice improvement over V1 from the smspower 2023 competition (which it won!). Don't let my playtime fool you here, I've been fully enjoying this game on an original SEGA Master System (and PS Vita for on the go action) as the ROM file is included alongside the PC version here on Steam. The online leaderboards here are a really cool addition and offer a nice reason to jump into the dedicated PC version as well ^_^
