Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers

I love Balatro, which is why I picked up this game, but after 15 hours of trying really hard to like it I just can't recommend it barring a major rebalance. What makes a roguelite deckbuilder good tends to be its balance and the player's ability to cultivate a winning deck over the course of a run. Slay the Spire, for example, is so well-balanced that you can win a run with just about any card in your deck if played right, and StS gives you plenty of opportunities to craft a winning deck through card removal, card upgrades, card copying, etc. Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers doesn't really do any of this in a way I would consider satisfying. There are plenty of opportunities to add cards from a random selection of 3-4 after every encounter in addition to shops, but there are so many cards that are either bad enough to never want to take, or so good that you will always take them when presented. The Balatro of blackjack (I know this came first) but blackjack is not well-suited for this kind of game. Incredibly frustrating to play well and still lose to variance. Sometimes you get blackjack and hit them for 1. Sometimes you stand on 19 and get hit for 6. Sometimes you get blackjacks in the wrong suit. Your ability to change or cut cards from your deck is totally random, based on events. All in all the game is interesting but frustrating and just not fun.

I really like playing this game when i need to kill time or when I'm waiting a match of online game. Is a really cool concept and is really relaxing. I highly recommend it for a casual player.

I call this game Dungeons & myself.

I actually feel kind of bad giving this one a bad review because it's basically the grandfather of its genre, but basically every other game in the genre is better so it's just not the one I would ever want to play

It's a good game with plenty of creativity. BUT you can get quasi-softlocked. If you build a Spades deck with lots of shield and get to the Bouncer (who has a similar mechanic) you two will be there for at least 10 minutes of real time. Probably longer but you get frustrated and quit by then. Same goes if you have a healing deck and encounter another healer. There are ways to combat this but that requires taking cards that don't fit your build and it is very unlikely that you'll be able to get rid of those cards later. Like I said, fun for a little bit but the above frustration tells me not to 'recommend' it.

Balatro if it was based on Blackjack instead of Poker. Some good humor here with the types of cards you can add to your deck.
