STORY

Half a year has passed since Shirou Emiya won the Fifth Holy Grail War. In the wake of the conflict, Shirou and his friends are readjusting to peaceful, everyday life. Meanwhile, in a desolate mansion on the outskirts of Fuyuki, a mage awakens: Bazett Fraga McRemitz, Seal Designation Enforcer from the Mage's Association...and former Master in the Holy Grail War.

"Come on, let's continue the Holy Grail War, Bazett Fraga McRemitz. All so we can find your wish this time," a shadow sneers at her. Its name is Avenger, Servant of an eighth class who never existed in the Fifth Holy Grail War. Their unlikely encounter signals that the battle is far from finished.

Shirou Emiya, aspiring champion of justice, steps onto the stage of the Holy Grail War once more. What fate awaits him beyond these four days of destiny?

If Saber has a million fans, then I am one of them. If Saber has ten fans, then I am one of them. If Saber has only one fan then that is me. If Saber has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth. If the world is against Saber, then I am against the world.

PSA - Remember to umute Shirou's voice once he starts speaking in the game, it's muted by default just like in Stay Night apparently. I also recommend putting 'text window opacity' to 0% and toggling 'text shadow' to on so that the art doesn't get covered by a gray overlay 90% of the game but you can still read the text easily.

Fate/Hollow Ataraxia is the real conclusion to everything Fate/Stay Night built up. It’s where all the pieces finally come together, major lore revelations, explanations that tie the whole story, and tons of crucial background info that was never addressed or fully explored before. This game is a direct sequel, to fully appreciate what Fate/Hollow Ataraxia does, you really need to have experienced all three Fate/Stay Night routes. Most people who haven’t read it, or have only watched the anime adaptations of the Fate series still don’t realize how much they’re missing or how little they actually understood about Fate, Unlimited Blade Works, or Heaven’s Feel. It also gives more development to many Fate/Stay Night characters, including details that trace back to events between Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night. Even secondary characters like Kuzuki get more depth and relevance than you’d expect, and some of these revelations even shed new light on Soujuurou’s background in Mah...

I played the fan translation of this game years ago, and I’m happy to see it finally get an official localization on Steam. YES, I recommend this game. But before you play it you really need to read Fate/stay night first. Is it long? Yeah, a bit. Is it worth it? Absolutely. What drew me to TYPE-MOON back in the day were the characters. I genuinely like them all — yes, even Shirou. While I love the tragic, heavy narratives TYPE-MOON is known for, Fate/hollow ataraxia gave me something different: a chance to see these characters living a more peaceful, almost everyday life. It was heartwarming to see Saber, Sakura, and Illya finally getting to enjoy small, normal moments after everything they’ve endured. It’s a bittersweet epilogue — part comedy, part mystery, part dream — but above all, it’s a love letter to fans who wanted to see their favorite characters smile just one more time. 9/10
A Tale that should've never happened... and yet it Did
Before getting into the nitty gritty of the main topic, I just want to talk about Fate/Stay Night for a bit first. It's a game that really needs no introduction. It's a game that introduced a myriad of iconic and beloved characters. It's a game that spawned one of the biggest multimedia entertainment franchises in the world. It's a game that still inspires many stories from many creatives around the world today even after more than 20 years since its inception. To say that the game is anything less than revolutionary would be a disservice to its legacy. And that very same widely beloved game, received a lesser known and severely underappreciated direct sequel in the following year after its initial release:
Fate/Hollow Ataraxia
... and that game's newest remaster is what I'm going to be talking about for most of this review right here. Hope you'll bare with my incoherent ramb...

Hollow Ataraxia is one of the best sequels I have ever experienced. I hear a ton of people say it's "not important" or "not necessary" to the Fate/Type-Moon experience. People who say this do not know what the hell they are talking about. Fate/Hollow Ataraxia IS IMPORTANT. It is a perfect extension to Fate/Stay Night, covering themes and characters the original story did not have time to fully flesh out. Characters who used to be just ideas (Bazett, Caren, Angra) are actual CHARACTERS and have such amazing development and impact. The plot is open, and allows you to lay back and experience calming days at your own pace, with more serious darker scenes mixed in between. This game just has an amazing vibe, and introduces so many concepts that paved the way for the Fate franchise, and I think is part of the reason it is as big and expansive as it is today.
