About This Game

Pixel Art Academy is an educational game for learning how to draw. In Learn Mode, you jump straight into the game's interactive tutorials for the fastest way of becoming a pixel artist. After you learn the rules behind pixel art lines, test your skills by drawing fan art and unleash your creativity with designing and illustrating your own pinball machine.

Please note that during Early Access the game does not cover all areas of art yet!

The game's content is organized around the 7 elements of art: line, shape, form, space, value, color, and texture. The current version only covers lines with about 2–3 hours of gameplay for a minimal playthrough (more if you complete all the challenges and put extra effort into game projects). The other 6 elements are planned to be developed during Early Access.

Features

 • An immersive user interface with a cozy, relaxing atmosphere.

 • Carefully designed interactive tutorials teach how to use drawing tools, followed by intermediate lessons covering pixel art fundamentals with a focus on line art and jaggies.

 • Put theory into practice with drawing challenges where you copy other indie game sprites or draw fan art from reference.

 • Design video game sprites as you customize the game Snake and create your very own pinball machine. Of course, you get to play the games as well!

 • Get in the groove with more than 6 hours of background music to accompany your drawing sessions.

Future development

Please keep in mind that the game is designed, drawn, and coded by a single person—me! I also have to run the business side of things, do marketing, and organize collaborations with other artists, all of which take time. Expect slow, but steady progress. I have been working on the bigger Pixel Art Academy universe for 9 years now and I don't intend to stop any time soon.

I also keep a completely transparent development process. Visit my YouTube channel for frequent devlogs or catch me anywhere on the internet to chat about current progress.

Learned with this, still learning, and quite a bit for both of those, would recommend for those starting off in pixel art. (also the controls/key binds are same as with Aseprite, so you get practice for that too)

Got this game after seeing a video in my youtube recommended where the dev talked about the development of the game and their goals. I was a bit sceptical at first in terms of how this all would work in practice, but I tried the demo and it was real fun! Got the game soon after and even if I'm relatively early on in it, I'm having a blast. The game is both really relaxing and quite informative. Like, imagine someone turning episodes of Bob Ross's show into a game. Really looking forward towards the future of this, as it's already super polished.

I wish learning anything was as straightforward and easy to follow as Pixel Art Academy. Lessons are short and build upon theory. this review is for an early access version so not every lesson is in quite yet. I'm looking forward to learning about shading and texturing as making sprites readable is important. There's a meditative paint-by-numbers aspect of filling in sprites with lines and colours, although i'm not sure how much I'm learning by searching around for the exact shade of brown for Dr.Eggman's moustache. Even now I think it gives people a base to understand how lines and shapes are used in sprite work and I think it's worth supporting the development.

I've been wanting to get into pixel art for a long time but had a hard time getting over that initial difficulty curve. I do other kinds of art, but pixel art is deceptively finicky. After playing through this I had a much easier time transitioning into doing projects on my own. It's also just a chill activity when I'm tired but want to do a little something, because the feedback & guidelines on the fanart challenges provide both useful practice and a low-pressure environment. Would love to see more lessons/challenges added to this; excited to see how/if it grows!

Just 48 Mins in of this lovely art game/tutorial i'm in love with it already, with it being a simple and easy step for people that want to get into pixel art and doesn't know where to start, this is a great way to bring in newcomers that would love to learn, before jumping into the actual pixel art tools and get overwhelmed with the tools. by doing challenges to give newcomers ideas of how objects or characters are made with monocolour at first then going to different colours really ease the process of understanding the basics of colour and shapes. would recommend this small game for people that want to try pixel art for their first time.

Really enjoying learning with this! More interactive than video tutorials, and doesn't just drop you in, but gets you hooked with small simple models before diving into actual foundational lessons, and showing you how to incorporate them to improve upon what you've already learned. Coming from a cross stitch background I've been wanting to make my own patterns and what is pixel art if not digital cross stitch lol

Honestly really amazing. The best thing about this program is that it really feels like it was designed with love. Both for games, art and even to you. It feels like the game was made with a real kindness and, honestly, even when I'm dealing with some of the tedium of learning, its really moralising. Really great, easy to learn with, great music too.

Extremely fantastic way to learn the Pixel art, [strike] even a little bit relaxing [/strike], and the improvement of the game is super visible!!! But a little suggestion is held in my mind, why not join the Cloud Archive ? That way we can enjoy this masterpiece on different device, and the archive would be more stable. ♥ ♥ ♥

This is a very good way to learn Pixel Art. I knew basic isometric stuff and all, but with this you also learn how to do all kinds of angles and ovals in a project style kind of way. I especially liked the practice projects where you must draw over a line-art image and figure out for yourself where all the pixels go, not everything lines up correctly on the grid. And afterwards there is a tool to show you which lines are "correct" in pixel art fashion. I most certainly recommend this program. I'm going through it for the second time now.
