One of the games of 2023 and possibly of all time
On the Job is a game which accomplishes surprisingly a lot with very little. The basic idea is combining a turn-based stealth puzzle with some light roguelike elements. You are an agent who has to advance through as many randomly generated floors as possible on a limited budget of health and ammo, collecting as many documents and $$$ on the way as you can. Enemies move together with you so you have to mind your routing and positioning. Between levels you receive random upgrades such as wall-penetrating bullets or the ability to melee, of which there isn't a lot and there's definitely more of a focus on using your brain instead of making a build that plays the game for you. But they still change the way you approach levels quite a bit. There are also several game modes you can try which alter the objectives or enemy compositions, giving surprising amounts of replayability. The graphics consist of static MS Paint sprites, bu...

It's a bittersweet feeling. Something like this comes out, it's straightforward, fun and re-playable, somehow makes me think of successful games like Vampire Survivors and Deep Rock Galactic which nailed said aspects and remained streamlined in their essence, and then there are games either full of visuals details, things happening in the background, and/or activities/quests with their own mechanics that at the end seem to forget what video games should be about. Done right, less can be more.

Simple, cute, strangely addicting. This is a really fun way to cool off after work, or idly pass the time. I'd love a mobile version to diddle with.
