The game had some hope if it kept being updated. However, it has not been in a very long time. Time of posting, there were 21 people in game per SteamDB.
The grind is bad at times since there used to be quick run/blitzes but have been removed since no stamina exists. Unless it is on steep (90%) discount, don't buy the game.
Will happily update if I see any signs of life.

Summary: Do not buy this game.
•Unfair AI that spam their units making another story level feel impossible to beat
•Grinding material is a massive headache thanks to the removal of staminas and there are no sweep button
•Medals (Freemium currency) also require grinding to unlock more characters although you can get it easily by doing task and random event which is rare
•PvP is either dead or filled with hackers
•This game is no longer update
So just save your money and buy something else

I mean… it could be better
Compared to the mobile version, this release has slightly better balance — early-game units hit harder, and most late-game units go down more easily — but it also feels about twice as grindy.
The main campaign (which you must complete to unlock the really interesting content) is nothing but wave after wave of unit spam. Worse, the late chapters are locked behind “optional” side stories that are just as spammy, but with the added restriction of forcing you to use specific factions.
While some balance improvements are welcome, the late-game power creep still exists. Certain units can dodge every type of attack, and some trigger that dodge almost every single time they’re hit, some even healing in the process. Even glass-cannon units become immortal nightmares if they can heal while dodging. Some have cooldowns on this invulnerability… but others don’t. (Looking at you, Red Goblin — you annoying bastard!)
