As a gamer that played a lot of DRG and survivor games, I can say that this one is one of the worst in the genre. I was having fun being DRG, but the gameplay loop quickly becomes boring and stupidly grindy, for a meta progression that feels incredibly slow and not rewarding. First of all, 95% of upgrades are just +% of a stat. That by itself is pretty boring. You are way too much pressured by time with the amount of side objective + resources you have to farm, that will impact your run and meta progression. Then the systems that exist for the meta progression... They feel so grindy, such a drag and not rewarding at all. What do you mean I have to do a ~30min somewhat hard run for a permanent +5% damage on a weapon? This multiplied by 5 times per weapon (I think we currently have 41 weapons, so that would be 205 runs if you can complete them 1st try to have all the weapons upgrades with + really small % of some stat)... Its just way too much of the same gameplay loop for a reward th...
No interesting mechanics. Slow movement, a lot of DPS checking, statpad upgrades..
I've played a few "Survivor clones" now and none have yet to grab me. But of all the ones I have tried I feel like this is the best one I have played so far. I feel it's better then other Survivor clones is because it has mining; you can mine rock and shape the level which gives an extra element over a flat plain like in vampire survivors. Also the graphics in this are way more appealing over the 2D sprite style of Vampire Survivors. This game also has excellent DRG themeing with entirely new voice lines; honestly they could have recycled all the voice and done less then this and it would have been fine. Sometimes you get screwed by the sheer RNG of pick-ups but such is the nature of this style of game. I hope they add multiplayer I can't help but feel like this would be more fun with a full team running around. Maybe if it was "same screen" multiplayer so you can't just run off and do your own thing. Also I know it would be a differnet game but I also feel like it would be co...
I wish there were a rating scale instead of a binary like/dislike. I've put almost 100 hours into the game. I'll make this brief: The good: -Art, atmosphere, and early game are fun. -The game is a good balance of challenging. -Weapon mastery runs are a fun concept that I really enjoy. I've gotten mastery up to haz3 on almost every weapon. The bad: -Leveling and upgrades kind of suck. Once you complete all of the upgrades, money and resources are worthless. The upgrades themselves are really boring too, only adding minor incremental stat increases. You don't really notice them until you have all of them, and even then it just makes the game a little less difficult. -So many weapons just kind of suck. You want to use them, but they will ruin your run on higher difficulties. It's a really joy killer when you're limited to only the useful weapons on higher difficulties. At $12, you'll get your money's worth before you get to the slog portion of this game. It's also early access,...
Its a fun game, but the balance is ridiculously bad. (I have 166 hours in this game. I have over 1000 hours on DRG.) If not balance, its the learning curve. Some classes or weapons you can lollygag on Hazard 5 with terrible RNG but others you are sweating buckets and not getting anything done. I'm told this is because you need to spec a certain way. But how am I supposed to know that? The game doesn't teach you anything. It doesn't give you much of any hints as to the best practices are. It just throws you in front of an alien bear and expects you know what to do against it. Trying to get mastery 5 maintenance worker (Engineer) is the reason I uninstalled this game. Seriously, you play out of your mind and you barely dent the bugs health in a map smaller than your broom closet. I tried, I tried, I tried very very very hard and many many many times. The game seriously hates you. There's absolutely no way the game teaches you the best ways to spec. And you end up frustrated a billion t...
The performance on higher hazard levels is terrible. It's truly awful. Please fix your game. Hazard Level 4, which is the base difficulty for DRG, is extremely hard. Even after spending dozens of hours grinding for classmods, weapon mods, upgrades, and biome stat buffs, it feels like a waste of time becauseit's not helping. It's frustrating to invest dozens of hours grinding to feel like you're punching a brick wall with your fists. I must be basic understanding of the core mechanics or weapon stats, but the game provides no explanation for these things. Does it explain what any of the anomaly dives are or why I should do them? No. Does it explain what potency does? No. Any sort of miners manual? No. Great. This game gets so many things wrong about the original DRG, which shows that the developers don't understand how to implement mechanics into an auto-shooter. It comes across as lazy and uncreative. For example, since all four dwarf classes can access all the weapons, w...
Feels more like a demo at this stage than a game, even for early access. Super grindy with no rewards and no gameplay changes. You play for 20 minutes for 2% health and repeat. A gameplay that is super boring already. The upgrade during missions are like "increase this", "increase that", no real changes to your gameplay. All spells do more or less the same. No synergies. Stay away until gameplay loop gets updated.
Even though survivors are a little bit overused genre recently, sometimes you get a gem like this that somehow makes it really interesting. The game is well balanced and the digging mechanic combined with the typical survivor leveling mechanic works great! The only downside is that the game is really demanding on the CPU. Pushing the AI navigation and enemy updates into many threads with better cache use would be great :)
I keep seeing reviews comparing this to Vampire Survivors. While this is also a "Survivor-like" game its not really fair to compare the two. With that being said, here is my direct comparison of the two LOL. I'd say this is more action/environment focused. You feel more stressed then when surrounded in this game then Vampire Survivors, I'd also say its harder then VS. The combos/leveling of weapons is MUCH easier in VS, however that just means when you do have a good run going in Deep Rock it feels much more rewarding. Overall I'd say its 100% worth playing if you enjoy "Survivor-like" games
