Hi. Here's a review from someone who didn't receive the game for free, has played for more than 1 hour, and will give an honest opinion on the game. I stumbled on this game, and it's a cheap buy. It isn't bad, but it also isn't great. Ultimately, I do enjoy it when I play, but it definitely takes you back to the days of NES difficulty, which is a time in gaming I do not miss. While I like a challenge and don't want my hand held, no difficulty setting in today's gaming world is a big downfall. Many indie devs have an obsession with making their games difficult opposed to "fun for everyone." Just a simple difficulty mode that increases the players HP's would be a nice feature. There's only one mode and you have 5 HP. While some might get far with this, others may struggle. This is why 90% of developers have a difficulty setting. They want to sell their game to a broader audience. You can even have a "hardcore" mode for really good players that only get 1 or 2 HP for an added challenge....

About This Game
Devil's Dive is a hellish rogue-lite that wears its inspirations on its sleeve, and smashes them all together. The game takes the Downwell core and introduces twin stick action for unique combat encounters, gliding mechanics for a pinch of precision and strategy, and some good ol' fashioned bullet hell boss encounters. All the while, the focus is slick, fast paced action and chaining those combos for big rewards!
Rogue-lite
Like any in the genre the game is tough but each run gives you the chance to unlock new toys to inch further into the fray. Shop gadgets and upgradable weapons on each run allow you to adapt to the dungeons whim.
Features

Very entertaining gameplay loop, simple in presentation but very challenging. - You drop down, holding jump lets you hover - Air kills only give you a combo - Combos run down over a short timer, reset on kill - Ammo for your weapon only restores when you land OR bounce on an enemy - Weapons take a few shots, bounce is an instant kill - 5/10/15/20/etc combos give you red gems, to spend on weapon upgrades From that you can see the gameplay loop becomes trying to rapidly move downward through the level sniping kills to keep up a combo and thus become stronger. The better you do, the stronger you get and the 'easier' the game becomes. It's really cool to promote 'perfection', but you're also not punished completely for missing combos as you can progress without the upgrades fine. It's a neat 'win more' mechanic, and also allows for more mistakes later as the game gets harder. I really really like it, very quick to pick up and play.
So, i completed this game about an hour ago, and as someone who's favourite genre is rogue-likes enjoys I %100 recommend it. I've been following the development process of this game for months now and being able to play it is like a breath of fresh air. It has a really fun progression system and heavily relies on the players ability to hit combos, which adds to the combat system in a really fun way. The classic and retro look is a unique style and adds a really nice touch to this game. Once you get the hang of the combat system there's nothing more satisfying than hitting a huge combo streak! I highly recommend this addictive rogue-like, and definitely suggest checking it out
Every aspect is oozing with creativity, the pixel art, animation, music etc It's great fun to play, highly recommend!
Fast, responsive, clever - though very short, more than worth the asking price.
10/10 game. Super fun and addictive, instantly had to go run after run when i launched the game. Everything about this game is just great. The art style, pixel art sprites, and animation are all top notch. The music is fantastic. The gameplay is smooth, haven't come across any bugs. The game is also tuned well in terms of balancing and difficulty, each run I feel like i'm slightly better than my last run. The roguelite elements, unlocking of weapons and upgrades are also very well done. And the bosses are also really challenging but fun! The mood and retro feel is bringing back memories from my childhood. Overall I highly recommend this game.
Permanent upgrades. And not just the cute, minor ones based on max combo - there's a whole merchant dedicated to stuff like permanent +1 max hp. REALLY a shame devs make that choice, the game looked promising.
S o l i d game, and a real hidden gem. Glad it came across my steam page, ez buy, especially for the price. Pro tip: when you beat a boss, go back to the beginning area if you die, the bit b e f o r e the tutorial room. You're welcome :^)
Really fun little game, definitely worth picking up if you think you like what you see. Also, the end credits have that thing where they show every enemy and their names <3
Really enjoying Devils Dive so far! The art and music are great, the game is challenging and fun to learn. You will get better as you progress and its a lot of fun racking up a combo and learning the rhythm of the game. Challenge rooms are a nice change of pace and offer nice rewards for more upgrades to your character and weapons. The bosses are unique and difficult. Really a fun rogue like so far, and a unique gameplay loop. I've not played anything quite like it.
