About This Game

"Know, oh prince, that in the years when Atlantis ruled the oceans, sins and arrogance unleashed fierce demons. When everything seemed lost, four heroes arrived to close the Gates of Abathor."

Players must cooperate and compete to save Atlantis, going through a series of challenges of increasing difficulty. In their progress, our heroes will fight against ferocious demons and primordial gods, against the living and against the dead, against flying beasts and crawling horrors. They will dodge dangers and traps and descend into chilling abysses. But they will also compete against each other for the loot and the spoils, plundering treasures and offering them to the gods to receive their favor.

A solid but basic throw back platformer. Each of the 4 characters has a unique special and dodge, that do distinguish them, but core gameplay remains basic. Personally I'd like a few more mechanics in my gameplay. Something beyond jump and slash, some faster movement and/or tech. There is a shop but it's all dull, minor percentage upgrades. Good sprite work and music, that doesn't hold a consistent tone. Level design is pretty awful lot of flat land and platforms placed seemingly at random. So why did I play this game twice, why give it a positive recommendation. It's cause this game just, keeps, going. There are so many stages and they get better. So many different enemy sprites, and they get bigger. It's absurd. It's absurd that the true end only becomes available at the end of a second playthrough, at the highest difficulty. That annoyingly removes mid chapter check points. Asking for honestly a bit much for most, but rewards you with the best stuff in the game. And and almost no ...

Abathor is a fun, challenging throwback to the side-scrolling hack and slash games of the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. It's also a blast if you've got friends to play couch co-op with. I recommend it if you're looking for a good retro game.

Abathor, developed by Pow Pixel Games and published by JanduSoft, is a retro-inspired action platformer that captures the essence of classic 16-bit arcade games while layering on modern design sensibilities and an ambitious scope. It embraces its pixel art roots with pride and invites players into a brutal yet vibrant journey through a mythologized version of Atlantis. From the very beginning, the game exudes a distinct nostalgic flavor—channeling the energy of titles like Golden Axe, Rastan, and Ghosts 'n Goblins—yet it does so with a deliberate sense of refinement that helps it stand out in the crowded field of indie platformers. The premise is straightforward and steeped in myth: the legendary Gates of Abathor have been forced open, releasing an army of darkness upon Atlantis. You play as one of four heroes, each drawn from different archetypes—Crantor the barbarian, Sais the warrior maiden, Kritias the ninja, and Azaes the warlock—each offering distinct gameplay mechanics,...

Okay, this one tries to conjure memories of a videogame age long before, but, unfortunately, it doesn't work for me. Gameplay is slow and unsatisfying in my opinion, and it kinds of gives me the feeling, that I've seen everything after just minutes in the game. Something unlucky adds to that feeling: The graphics look very empty, like a screen full of the same 16x16 tile of sand, which gives me kind of no-immersion to the scene. In fact, even Castlevania 1 from the NES had a bigger range of tiles, with everything made to support the atmosphere. But with the small characters in Abathor, and the animated background of giant waves which completely irritates me during the game, I, for myself only, decided not to dive further into the game. Give it a try, and make your own opinion, as I always say.

+++ good vision effect ++ decent MD-platform-style music ++ some interesting references to other classic games - monotonous stage design -- platforms with distraction -- almost useless character upgrades except for mp cool down ----- too short character attack range compared to enemy makes you like a joke --- each characters have their own defects which potentially drives you mad ----- First character's special attack forcing you to move forward from which whether you get damage or fall off from an edge --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This review was negative, but one of devs found me actively and kindly gave me his idea towards my review. After all, my word at the beginning was not friendly at all and he still being nice. Even the problems above cannot be fixed now, the devs attitude got my recognition. I suggest play with your friends which would bring you more fun:)
