About This Game

Star Wars™: Dark Forces Remaster has been brought to life by the team at Nightdive Studios, fully remastered through its proprietary KEX engine, allowing the game to run on modern gaming devices at up to 4K resolution at 120FPS. New and returning players will enjoy Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster’s upgraded gameplay, high-resolution textures, enhanced lighting and rendering, and support for gamepads.

The original 1995 Star Wars: Dark Forces raised the bar for FPS games, offering players a significant degree of movement and interactivity, a large selection of items and power-ups, and engaging environments.

In the first Star Wars FPS video game, players assume the role of Kyle Katarn, a defector of the Galactic Empire turned mercenary for hire. Katarn joins the Rebel Alliance’s covert operations division tasked with infiltrating the Galactic Empire, where he discovers the secret Dark Trooper Project. The development of this powerful new series of Imperial battle droids and power-armored stormtroopers stands to strengthen the Empire’s grip on the galaxy unless Katarn and the Rebel Alliance intervene.

Key Features:

  • All fourteen original levels, featuring Star Wars™ worlds and capital ships
  • Use your ability to jump, duck, and crawl to solve puzzles and defeat enemies

I didn’t expect to get pulled in this hard. One minute I’m on a quiet Rebel briefing, next I’m sneaking through an Imperial facility with blaster fire echoing in the halls. Kyle Katarn isn’t some overpowered Jedi, he’s just a guy with guts, a good aim, and a knack for getting into trouble… and out of it.The remaster nails it, crisp visuals that still feel retro, smooth controls, and sound design that’s pure Star Wars. When you hear a stormtrooper shout before you drop him with a perfect shot, it hits different. And the maps? They make you think. You’re not just running down a corridor; you’re finding switches, hidden paths, and secrets you’d miss if you rushed. This isn’t a modern hand-holding shooter, it’s a piece of Star Wars history that demands you play smart. And when you beat a mission, you feel like you earned it.if you missed it back in the day, now’s your chance. If you played it then, welcome home.

Mines are going to wreck your life. On Hard, you'll probably need to find a few extra lives to get through Jabba's Ship. I needed 4 for the last level. Even when things went south I still wouldn't change the save system. Lives and no saves makes the difficulty satisfying. Your tears keeps me hydrated. To be fair, the respawns can be pretty cheap and spawn you right on top of enemies. Even so, I'm glad I got to play this with all the QOL improvements and graphic enhancements. "There he is! Stop him!"

Less than 5 minutes into booting up the game for the first time, Kyle Katarn, scooping up the death star plans remarks "This is too easy". I couldn't agree more. For returning fans such as myself, you will probably blast through this in under 7 hours on Hard difficulty, and unfortunately there are no fun achievements or unlockable's to expand the challenge. Is this a huge problem? Not really, I love this game and this is a fantastic remaster. But I am left wanting more... new levels? a challenge mode? multiplayer? The possibilities are endless. As stoked as I am on getting the OG Dark forces back.. I ll be crossing fingers and toes that Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight is on the way soon. Nightdive has done good work here, keep it up!

I played Dark Forces 2 as a kid, but never the first game. This game still really holds up though, it could be released now and I'd still think it's a great game. Lots of little secrets and puzzles throughout the game. It oozes Star Wars vibes and the voice over/cutscenes are great and feel very stylish. The remaster looks great and it has worked flawlessly on steam deck so far. I think it's worth the price, but it does go on sale, so if you apprehensive get it then. It is worth buying and supporting these good remasters. You get a great game, that still holds up today and these titles aren't lost to time.

One of the many games that could really use a more nuanced recommendation system. It's an amazing update/port/remaster of a game that has inherent design issues. Running around shooting stormtroopers has rarely been this fun. The level design is frequently awful though. I powered through the sewer level without a walkthrough, but ultimately the mission where you have to rescue an informant was just too obtuse, and I've beaten Descent, Descent II, Hexen and Hexen II without a guide. So I give this a recommendation because this version of the game is amazing; Nightdive really knocked it out of the park. But the game itself doesn't do anything for me. If you have fond memories of the original I would definitely give this a go as it's the definitive version of Dark Forces. For me, well, I'm just gonna wait and hope for a Nightdive Enhanced version of Jedi Outcast instead, which IMO is the only game in this series that was truly great.

Don't really have much to say. Just a bland story with some bland characters a few okay weapons that feel the same except for some late game weapons like that rifles the lizard guys use, some decent levels like the sewers or that ice planet, and music that sounds ripped from Star Wars so you know its good, However, due to the just okayness of the game, the only things that stood out were the annoyances. Like I swear Stoomtroopers kept respawning in some levels like the refueling station. Or how self destructive the grenades are to use since your more likely to blow yourself up instead than your enemies, doubly annoying since the grenadier enemies are masters if the craft. Or having no mid level saves so I can't explore without being punish for it, or that time I fought Boba Fett, walked backwards and fell to my death and could find Boba so I had to restart the level. Or the worst level of the game, the detention center with it's elevator puzzle I needed a video to solve. It's an ...

One of the best star wars games ever made and the remastered only makes it better, not to mention this game was revolutionary for fps games back in the day.
